Greenpeace? Nah. Too polite. Rainbow Warrior should have been armed with a Silkworm missile or ten, and its crew issued with Kalashnikovs. Might have made a bit of a difference in New Zealand, 1985.

Darn, Botnst just reminded of my secret "boss" crush who is vegan and into that sort of environment/animal welfare thing. She gave me a vegan brochure published by PETA many months back because I told her I was interested in trying out a vegetarian-vegan diet. Maybe I should have signed up with GP to show her I'm hardcore too
Hmmm, come to think of it, maybe I'll ask her for her opinion of GP.

If it becomes a friendship and they're both still interested, then he'll have the choice to resign, speak to her, and continue things as a relationship (or not). A professional relationship isn't a life sentence last I checked. Your logic = welcome to the p*ssyfication of America. |

Crime, no. Risky, yes. I wouldn't be stupid enough to date an employee. If it doesn't work out and she goes away, fine. If she screams "sexual harassment", my goose is cooked. If other employees see us dating, they too could scream that because of our relationship she gets preferred treatment. Sorry, seen that and learned from that mistake. I ain't that stupid nor do I think it is worth the risk of a suit or to have unhappy employees insinuate things. You go for it in your own company but I put too much blood, sweat and tears in mine to have that happen to mine. I'll sit back and watch someone else go up in smoke.

Then the other option is a direct approach: "Jane, I've been interested in getting to know you better for a while ... ... ... I've had offers from other companies and if you feel uncomfortable seeing me outside of work, I'm happy to leave the company for personal reasons." In other words, what would you do if an employee whom you're interested in also expresses HER interest and offers to resign if it makes you uncomfortable? |

In my experience, office romances rarely end well and equally for both parties. Eventually one (or both) become so uncomfortable that one (or both) leave. Essentially retarding the professional life of one or both. Or as a colleague opined, "Don't shyte in your nest."
It reality, there is more available companionship than there ever has been. Look outside of your nest. Back in the 1990's my boss was an attractive, bright woman. She was single and Imo an easy target. I didn't and never looked back: My career and family were worth more to me than that. I hope that had I been single that my behavior would have been no different. Anyway, that's by current delusion. |

Anyway, my point wasn't to date the lady at work. My point was that he shouldn't be afraid of attempting to get to know her better. Not dating at work: resigning before any "dating" happens is an option. All this assumes 6+ months of reserves in the bank, what any sane person over the age of 25 should have. You spend 1/3 of your waking life at work, and hopefully meet some interesting, bright people. Why not use the situation to full advantage? PS - Michelle was Mr. O's boss at Sidley Austin.
