2of them. Early ones. They looked for all the world like aluminum Buick Special engines from like 1962, except with electrics provided by William Lucas. I recall the gearbox and transfer case was flimsy looking and leaked like a sieve.

Think my ML with its lift and mud tires would have made it through there.

Fulcrum, you need to lift your G and stick some better tires under it. You will be able to tackle quite a bit more difficult terrain, and take less risks with damaging stuff.

I only took a handful of pictures but there were plenty of sticky spots!

No, I will NOT lift the G-Class but I do plan on one day getting more aggressive tires. The only problem I had was that I didn't remove my tow hitch so I bumped it a time or two (Far to gently to hurt anything)

Good call.....

GM did indeed sell the old worn out tooling from the early 60's uneven firing aluminum V6's to the Brits.

Gm kept building the v6 (perhaps to this day).

Not quite. GM sold them the rights to the BOP aluminum v8. The engine is still being built and sold in England with little change in the basic motor excepting the induction devices.

Neat video. That G certainly leaves nothing to be desired. I agree with you that lifting it would be an unnecessary mistake. Really nice ride there.

Yes other then a new set of original wheels and tires (Which should be getting here tomorrow) I won't be messing with it.

Also I think i'm going to hold off on doing any major restoration work for at least a few years. My worry is that if I make it perfect...I won't want to hurt it and thus not use for it's intended use. I'll keep it cosmetically respectable and will do some rust repairs from time to time but no body off frame stuff for a while.

Awesome! I don't know how I missed your thread the first time around, M. Looks like a blast! What trail did you run?

Before my Jeep became a work truck, I used to do some trail running. I suspect that's what precipitated the eventual "death wobble", although hauling around a 600 lb. plow didn't help the suspension components any.

That sounds like the best plan. Dependent upon your budget and how much off-roading you plan on doing, Stockton Wheel has a pretty extensive line of stock appearing yet taller or wider rims in addition to building custom ones. I understand they're under new ownership, but my father bought some custom steel wheels from them back in the 80's for his Blazer because he wanted to run wider 31's (those were big back then! ) for driving on the dunes at Cape Cod. With the hubcaps on you could barely tell they weren't standard equipment.

Thats the way to go. If you do restore it you will be scared to take it off road and thrash it.

I know its a bit of a hike from CT but there is some awesome wheeling spots in the pine barrens of Wharton St Forest in New Jersey.

This was on the very extensive trails around Voluntown.

Do you know of any closer to home that I should know about?

Video looked like fun. No sound on this computer, so if you were all having a horrible time and screaming for help, it went unnoticed.

I'd really like to get to that side of the continent for some adventures. I've spent plenty of time on foot in western PA and NY, but always had to leave the 4X4 at home (it won't fit into the overhead compartment). As per Enterpise's policy, we NEVER took any of the rented SUV's off of the paved road. At all. I'm pretty sure. Sometimes it was hard to tell if there was pavement under all the mud and snow, but I'm pretty sure there was. Probably.

Out west here, mud and water are fairly rare. Even when it does get muddy, they close the trails. But, hey, we get the desert!

We manage to get out and about a bit:

Closer, no. Not legally. I had permission from a couple farmers in South Glastonbury near the river and Lebanon, although there were a couple Jeep clubs that also had permission to use the trails.

If I had time to do the volunteer trail maintenance days and attend meetings I probably would have joined one of them (but I had time for neither and knew the two old-timers that owned the land so I didn't) because a club is definitely the way to go in southern New England where land values and liability concerns drastically limit the options available. They take care of obtaining permission from the landowners(s), usually via property and trail maintenance, so they have access to trails not otherwise open to individuals.

Some guys like to run exclusively with particular makes so there are many brand-specific clubs out there, another option are clubs like JonFund or Eastern 4 Wheelers which are open to all makes.

How do I get permission from said farmers in Glastonbury (Come on you know me; I wouldn't go tearing up fields like some idiot)

I like the idea of the volunteer trail maintenance, I'll have to look into it. Thanks for the tip!
