Telluride Bluegrass Fest

Anyone on here heading out to Telluride this year?

I'll be working there again, 17 years now....

For those that like the music but can't make the trip, the show is broadcast live by KOTO 91.7 (local Telluride radio station) and can be heard around the world online at - KOTO - 91.7 FM Telluride, CO - Listen Online

Warning... be aware that KOTO has a slight left lean to it...

Tohellyouride, as an old pal of mine used to call it. Sounds like fun, thanks for the link.

To Hell, You Ride... That expression was born out of more truth than poetry.
In fact it is still apt on those years when the geniuses behind the Ride The Rockies bicycle tour bring 2000 riders and support crews up and down the canyon when 20000 bluegrass freaks are doing the same....

Not much to see from the stage though...

^^^^ If one more 250 lb. woman wearing pants 3 sizes too small and wearing 2 gallons of makeup, comes into my shop and says that she's just a "Little" Country Girl, I am kill myself.

This happens several times a year.

I fell in love with Telluride (and Colorado) the first time I visited it. I've never been for any of the festivals but it's still my favorite place to ski.

And the iced tea at the Floradora Saloon really hits the spot after a hard day of skiing.

When is the festival?

I've never been to CO (Rockies) in the summer, but I get out there every few years to ski. Beats the beach any day. Love, love, love to ski!!

In about 1991 my first wife and I were on a motorcycle trip and drifted into Telluride during this festival. It looked like Woodstock revisited. If not for the (few) more modern vehicles you could have been back in the Sixties. VW campers galore, tents, long-hairs, headbands. We didn't stay there but it was great to ride around town.
Have been back to Telluride (and may get there again in a couple weeks) and have enjoyed it every time. Definitely the low-impact lifestyle. I would love to move to the Rockies in retirement but the prices may prohibit that.

This year the fester is June 21-24. 4 days of long-haired friends of banjos...

Telluride is a little page out of the past, and beautiful as well.
Never skied there in all my years in CO, but I've mountain biked a number of the trails, and can only imagine how much fun it would be to ski some of those slopes.
Believe if I am ever in that area with my skis, I would have to give Silverton a shot. No grooming, no cut trails and nothing but advanced (they mean advanced!!) and expert slopes. Couple hundred skiers per day max. Their easiest slope has a 35 degree slope....

In a week? Wow, wish I would have known about it sooner.

I'm an advanced skiier, but wife is not - so expert-only areas won't fly.

Can always listen online.

I will try to post some pics up here.

Betting on a bunch of songs played in remembrance of Doc Watson and Earl Scruggs, may they rest in peace. Both were regular players at this fest, and both were exceptional people... and neither of them needed an extra porter to carry their egos...

I always found Winter Park, the Mary Jane side in particular, to be a great place for people of differing abilities on skis. Lots of groomed cruisers with gladed out woods running right next to them.

and they have smoking cabins, if you know where to look...

The venue would be stunning. I'd be tempted to skip out of town and drive out there, but it's probably tough to find a place to stay at the last minutre.

We usually go to Vail, but will drive to Breckenridge, A-Basin etc. A-Basin is tough. A lot of really good local skiiers.

We don't smoke weed anymore. Last time we tried it was in Cambodia when it was sprinkled on a pizza. "Special Happy Pizza" on the Mekong River. http://www.happyspecialpizza.com/

It's pretty all right. I attended the River Runners Rendezvous up there several years back in the 80's. It was still kind of a funky old place taken over by hippies but even then was getting to be full of itself. I remember paying 8 dollars for a twelve pack of Old Milwaukee that could be had anywhere else on the planet for 3.75.
I live close to two towns that think their **** doesn't stink, and have little patience with any others, regardless of the draw.

Telluride has an amazing mix of runs. Long groomed blue ones (think SPEED) and seriously mean verticals with big moguls (Jaws and the infamous Plunge). One of the things I love about it is that it is simply too remote to go for a day and the town has only so many beds, so it's never crowded, either on the slopes or in town.

I think of Telluride as the anti-Vail. Vail is a zoo, and it actually has a run called Tourist Trap. After visiting Vail, I figured they should have named the run "Vail" and called the town "Tourist Trap."

Steamboat Springs is also terrific.

I got a large shot of Colorado when I went to the '92 Nat. Rainbow Gathering (not a gay thing - buncha back to the land hippies) outside of Paonia on the Grand Mesa. Was there from early June to late July and then got a job working with the carnival in Grand Junction, did one more city - Durango - with them. Went through Teluride on the way back. Pretty spot, would love to do the festival someday.

I like Vail. It's a It can get crowded, but it depends on the run. I've been to Steamboat, but it was when I was a kid. At that time it was a cowboy town -- good powder too.

Utah's Alta and Snowbird are great. Not as touristy, but offer a lot of choice. We did a lot of out of bounds tree skiing. Nobody around...
