That's a big plus beyond how much gas and how many tires you go through. Commuting with your spouse is a good thing, at least it would be for me.

Other than when in the Army and the pseudo "jobs" I had during high school and before the Army, plus the work I've done at home, the shortest commute I've ever had was thirteen miles. It was a piece of cake.

My commute is 12 miles one way; takes about 20 minutes in the morning and about 27 minutes in the afternoon. I'm currently driving the 87 Champagne 300SDL and the AC sucks when I'm in the stop and go traffic in the afternoon. Running the AUX fan all the time helps.

I'm hoping to sort out the AC issues on the 2000 Dodge (diesel) Dakota, so it can become my commuting vehicle.

Hey everyone just thought I'd update this a bit. I've been pretty busy now. I've been assigned a project for the past week+2 days now. Its pretty interesting at time and can be boring at time but you know that's how it goes. Its much better now that I'm actually doing something rather than just sitting there reading a document on some gizmo. Learning cool new things and I think my project will have a pretty good impact on just more than my department and the original project's goals. The project was mostly my suggestion (I believe)...

The drive is not horrible. I tend to dislike the morning drive more than the afternoon. Just because I'm not a morning person. Shower time is at 10PM, Bed by 1045-11PM. Up at 6, out of bed at 615. Food, make lunch and on the road by 630-640. At Work by 745-755.

They are letting me leave proportional to how short I make my lunch. So I've been leaving at 415 rather than 5...and getting home at 530-540 rather than in the 6's. I think, mentally, this just seems sounds/feels better to me.

My 190E has been getting 23-24 mpg. I love the car, but my hindparts do not appreciate the ride quality all that much nor does Mr. Wallet. So we got together and decided to pick up a 300D 2.5 Turbo. I got just a hair under 40 mpg (39.2mpg) on the way home from Columbus where I bought it.

Based on my projections (somewhat foggy at the moment), the 190E would need filled 10x a month...where as the 300D will only need to be filled 4-6 times a month (depending on mpg) and the 300D's refill pattern takes 3 months to repeat so the 190E would have been about 1100$/3-months..where as the 300D is like 600-800 over 3-months.. Thus paying the initial investment off in gas saving just over a year. The 300D projects were ran at 30 and 35 mpg (I think) so with it getting 40... maybe sooner.

In nice weather I commute on a Ninja 650R. 50 mpg and it can get around slow movers in traffic quite a bit better than the Benz.

I have been doing a 70 mile roundtrip for 15 years now. That came down from about 90.
As you get older it starts to get to you. I am too close to retirement to (a) move closer or (b) buy a more expensive more comfortable ride that I would need to work longer to pay for. So, I just suck it up and get grumpier....

Up until I retired last year I drove 12 miles to work. For 25 years I filled up different vehicles about every 1 1/2 weeks. For 10 years prior to that every week at least.

Now I go the the grocery store and the bank which is less than a mile from my house. I now fill up my daily driver about once every 3 weeks to a month! Aint life great! I should get a bicycle.
