A thought comes to mind....
Instead of trying to figure out what's wrong with our society, where such events take place, and trying to figure out a solution based on that alone... Perhaps look at a few other countries where guns are quite prevalent, but these types of incidents are seemingly rare or unheard of... A recent thread or news article on Switzerland, where everyone must do X number of years compulsory service in the militia or military when they come of age - and during that time keep and maintain a military grade infantry rifle, in their personal possession... Yet, unless the media is completely ignoring it, similar incidents in Switzerland are unheard of.... What are the differences between our country and Switzerland, such that they can have a high number of weapons floating about - not just handguns, sporting rifles, and shotguns, but military grade weapons - but yet remain seemingly free of such tragedies?
