What if it were written as follows: "All citizens of good repute have the right to own non-WMD arms of lesser or equivalent destructive power to those used by an infantryman in the current US military?" Not all rewriting has to take away rights.

Only if we also repeal the first amendment.

Just kidding--but why is it that people who want repeal the 2nd hold the 1st in such high esteem? They stand or fall as a unit. Without an armed citizenry, why would anyone think the first amendment would last for long?

Just dissolve the union and then all of the savages, I mean gun owners can move where the other hicks are--somewhere in fly-over country, leaving paradise on Earth for the rest of us.

Good point! Why do they NOT look at the first ammendment when they gritch about the second?

Because of good repute soon becomes anyone that has never had a parking ticket or been suspended from grade school, unless you are a government official.

Why? If enough people wish to amend the 2nd, (that is part of the system) then the rest should be American enough to accept that change.

Hardline comments like yours provide nothing.

BTW, I voted no, mostly because I did not like the way #3 was worded. The 2nd does not need to be rewritten, it needs amending. The original language should not be tampered with, but clarification outlining what is acceptable to the people at this juncture in time should be added. Obviously, the firearm has evolved incredibly since the adoption of COTUS, and the 2nd should be amended to reflect those changes. It is supposed to be a living document, not a stale old piece of paper with no relevance to the modern world.

Certainly, I believe that any attempts to alter/interpret the 2nd should be done with amendment rather than legislation. It is a far higher bar, and I believe much more representative of the will of the people.
Congress has gotten awfully eager to repress the rights afforded to us under COTUS, and I don't believe there are many people who like that tendency.
If they want to directly impact our rights under COTUS, then they should be using the amendment procedures outlined in article 5, not doing end around legislation.

Please.... if you are going to take that tack, then they ALL stand or fall as a unit...
So, where the hell are all the rabid 2A supporters when the assaults have happened on the 4th, the 5th, the 14th....

Seems some people only GAS about their little guns, and have no concern for any other rights.

I would venture to guess that in the last century, guns have been used far more often to repress others 1st amendment rights than to defend them....

They do Larry. The first has had common sense restrictions in place for decades.

I assume the reason gun control advocates are motivated is to decrease the murder rate.

FBI Uniform Crime Reports show homicides dropped to 12,664 in 2011, the last year available. The murder rate has dropped from 9.3 per 100,000 in 1992 to 4.7 per 100,000 in 2011.
