Personally, I find it interesting that the state with the lowest rate of gun crime also has the loosest gun control laws (they had unrestricted carry since the 1800s). Vermont.

I'd attribute it to old-school reserved New England conservatism -- lack of a tradition of "Wild West" or "gang banger" cultures. And unlike say AZ, they're not showy about their carry laws. I've walked into a roadside cafe in AZ and seen half the people armed to one degree or the other. That would be frowned upon and considered rude in New England, even if legal.

It's a question of culture as much as laws.

Not by a long shot.

But I believe there are more of us who like guns, don't want to see stupid and ineffective legislation, and yet are still concerned with the over abundance of weapons in our society
Too many idiots have guns. Taking them away from everybody to get them away from the idiots would suck. Leaving them in the hands of the idiots sucks too....

Unfortunately for all of us on either side of the debate, there is no meaningful discussion about the future.
We have zealots screaming 'Shall not be infringed' on one side.... and zealots who want to ban anything that is black and scary looking on the other...
People who don't even understand what they are trying to ban are as bad as people who assume that their extremely narrow interpretation of a 250 year old document is the only valid interpretation.

I would believe that to be an erroneous assumption.

AFAIK the gun control advocates wish to see a drop in overall gun violence.

Perhaps you have stats on that we should share so we don't go infringing on a constitutional right without some sort of, you know, data.

Oh, here we go....
FBI — Table 1

Violent crime rate has dropped from 757.7/100k in 1992 to 386.2/100k in 2011.

Stats to back up the assertion that gun control advocates want to see an overall decrease in gun violence??

Oh, perhaps you have some stats on that? Or maybe the gun control fanatics just sort of make shyte up without data.

I think SOME gun control advocates are concerned by overall gun violence. I further believe those gun control advocates are unwitting tools of those who favor eliminating an armed populace for other reasons.

NONE of the measures I have seen advanced would have prevented the recent tragedy. In fact, not even the supporters make any claim that their measures would prevent gun tragedies. Therefore you must look for another reason.

Kinda early to be sauced, ain't it?

All I suggested was that it was my opinion that the gun control people are likely concerned with all gun violence, not just the number of homicides in this country per 100K people....

Yeah, I do recall what you wrote and your assumption maybe correct. Damned if I can figure out what they want.

Assuming you are right, I had hoped you might provide the supporting data they have accumulated to bolster their argument. All I could find is that murders have dropped and violence has dropped.

I'm betting somebody somewhere has the data but isn't playing show-and-tell. If it's the gun lobby then we could assume they are hiding gun violence. If it's the gun control lobby then they are hiding a lack of supporting evidence for gun violence.

All I could find was FBI stats, which clearly show a downward trend in violence in almost every category. It would be really interesting to know what would cause all violent crimes to decrease but violent gun crimes to increase.

Do you think I am sauced?
