This should concern you.....
"The thirty year anniversary of the founding of the Corrections Corporation of America marks an all-time high for the for-profit prison industry. An increase of immigration- and drug-related arrests have contributed to the growth of the CCA in recent years. But according to their latest 10-K, an annual performance report provided to the Securities and Exchange Commission, their profitability is threatened by many factors:
“Legislation has been proposed in numerous jurisdictions that could lower minimum sentences for some non-violent crimes and make more inmates eligible for early release based on good behavior. Also, sentencing alternatives under consideration could put some offenders on probation with electronic monitoring who would otherwise be incarcerated. Similarly, reductions in crime rates or resources dedicated to prevent and enforce crime could lead to reductions in arrests, convictions and sentences requiring incarceration at correctional facilities.” The CCA speaks just as candidly about areas in which to capitalize. In a presentation to investors last year, the CCA attributes current economic factors in creating a “unique investment opportunity.” Increases in law enforcement and funding (due to recovery from the recession), high rates of recidivism (repeated imprisonment), and acquisition of government-owned correctional facilities are all cited as reasons for anticipated growth " Its not about justice anymore, its about profit, and the industry is not going to go away ![]() http://ivn.us/2013/02/02/30-years-later-private-prisons-have-a-future-to-secure/ |

The CCA was part of the organizational effort in drafting and passing Arizona's SB1070 law aimed at stemming illegal immigration. Consider where was the state going to put folks who couldn't "show papers."

I call it the "Prison-Industrial Complex"; it's the same idea as the "Healthcare-Industrial Complex" and the "Education-Industrial Complex". All three are massive self-sustaining entities that we all pay for.

I'm going to pull a Larry. Does not affect me so I don't care
Prison has been big money for a long time. I remember reading about this 15-20 years ago as I recall.

They shouldn't worry. Even if we legalized all victimless crimes, there would still be people murdering, raping, and stealing, and getting caught for it.

"anymore"? Seriously? The prison INDUSTRY is not about justice, it is an INDUSTRY. Read what you write about. You have a need, I have a product. It IS that simple. I don't understand why you think a company is about social gain. I form a company TO MAKE MONEY. Nothing more, nothing less. As long as it isn't illegal, I don't expect a company to care about more than money or fake caring about you to make more money. It is an ENTERPRISE. If an ENTERPRISE cannot make money, it needs to fold and go home.Well, when you stop all crime, there will be no need for prisons and the industry will go away. You got your job cut out, go do it.

Lets not forget our friend the government when you say that. Once you become a player in the game, you are not exempt from blame when things go south. You might debate about what your contribution might have done, speculate about how bad it MIGHT be (since you can never know) without you or rail on another party that is involved but you cannot remove your presence in the matter. Didn't someone talk about student loans and there was govt involvement and it was said to cause the cost to go up?

An electrician should have wire you can use. A "someone like him" might have string.

I heard that the euphemism for "public executioner" when NY carried out the death penalty was "state electrician."

Why is having a CCA a bad thing if the job gets done? Maybe they can do it cheaper if they don't have to worry about unions. SOMEBODY has to do it. it provides jobs and the customers will always be there....
Remember, everybody in jail made a choice to be there.
