Passing on two lane roads can be tough. It was so bad when I drove a 240D that I seldom even tried. I don't do all that much of it in the 300. Now when I get on the 650, I have enough acceleration capability to execute passes very quickly, which reduces the time and distance I have to spend in the other lane, and also reduces the amount of time available for the drivers I'm passing to change their control inputs. These are good things.

A local farmer, who lives 2 miles from me, was hit head on by a driver passing multiple cars in a passing zone. Needless to say, the innocent farmer died and left behind a widow and a few young children to now run his operations. The driver of the minivan spent a couple of weeks in the hospital and is ok.

It sounds like the op wants justification for his irresponsible and reckless actions from the peanut gallery here, it looks like he hasn't garnered much support if any.

Sounds like the op needs to spend more time honing his driving skills, in the real world and not in the seat of a pinto powered go kart.
I had a close call similar to that once. I was headed north on NV 431 toward Mt. Rose summit and doing about 90. I encountered a silver Audi in my lane headed south passing a slug. I braked, scrubbed off about 40 mph very quickly, and was considering taking it to the shoulder when Audi got around slug and back into his lane. In this case, no harm, no foul. Sounds like in your example the guy picked the wrong time to pass.

Try turning right onto a two lane country road while a slug war is happening and it is now barreling at your grill. Even better, try making a left turn off said road while one is going on behind you. Scary.

Most of the 20 mile stretch to my house is now four lanes, except for the last few miles. Twenty years ago, when it was all two lane, I would see multiple cars in the morning that had gone of the road into the ditch and gotten stuck the night before because of people doing unsafe maneuvers trying to get home five minutes sooner.

Back then, my father got run off the road into the ditch by someone passing in the other direction. I can tell you that the only thing that can pull a 1973 deuce and a quarter out of a rainy ditch is a tractor, not my then current daily driver CJ7 that ended up stuck also.

Obvoiusly passing skills on two lanes are a fading art.

When you think of it though just driving 2 to 3' from another car going in the opposite direction is pretty scarey too. I have observed that in many places the legal passing zones are becoming fewer and further inbetween.

Not so much a fading art, but a maturity and wisdom that comes with age and experience. Not to mention a family that needs me and assets that would be at risk.

Putting other people's lives at risk in order to pass multiple cars on a two lane road is a narcissistic thing to do.

This is why people should have a cheap dash cam, immature drivers can ruin your day in a hurry.

I was passing one car. If you weren't there I cannot understand how you have such a strong opinion about what happened.

Do you pass slower cars on two lanes?

I'll tell you what Mr. Wyatt, I challenge you to a contest of driving skill duel. Since I offered the challenge you pick the test. Winner buys the loser a T-bone steak dinner with a potatoe and desert in a mutually agreeable location.

It has to be a reasonable test of skills that has application to controlling a car in a realistic test of usable road driving skills.

I don't mind you ridiculing me but really its unfair to attack my innocent little Formula Ford.

I am smiling but I am serious.

^^^THAT calls for a video. Are you guys allowed to talk trash?

You know what I've always wanted to see? A foot race between Brian Carlton and Roy Hunter. Don't know why, just thought it would be funny

If it isn't, my signature applies to him.

I just hope you were not in your new 95 300d as that would be a little to early to see how well it is at passing. And hopefully you were in the Miata so there is not another strike against us Benz owners.

During certain times and in certain places, yes. On that particular road at that particular time, not so much.

Thanks for the challenge, but I'll pass.

Although, I can say that I haven't had a moving violation in over 20 years and have never been in an accident of any kind.

It's hard not to be sarcastic when you insinuate that so called slugs are not safe to follow, and that was your nexus for passing and endangering the lives of innocent people on the road.

I can only imagine the risks taken when there isn't a mature passenger to throttle your teenage antics.

Driving skills are no longer required. Many people have problems passing on Interstates with multiple lanes. Two lane roads, forget it. Four-way stops, forget it. Merging, forget it. Left turns, forget it. Texting and driving, conversational skills, forget it.

You are right, passing zones are rare and yet some are in stupid, unsafe places like on hills. More will disappear.

Old timers told me that cars were the downfall of Western Civilization. It all went to hell when people could drive to town and didn't stay on the farm and work. Now people accumulate dead things and don't even know what life is.

Young people are telling me that dating is not about people anymore, all about the genitals.
