I think you're in a situation where if I were in the same one, I believe there's tons of good advice here to keep in mind and or follow. The woman friend thing may be all she wants out of your acquaintanceship with her. I'd see if I could spend some more time with her, but realize that she may not want anything more than acquaintanceship. If I recall from your story correctly, she's never been married, and now over 55 yrs. old. That's a bad sign in that she may be old enough to realize that she doesn't necessarily want to be or pursue a marriage. I'm of the age where I'm not so sure that I would want to be married either. Acquaintanceships and occasional dating and travel companionships are suiting me just fine. But then, I am a free spirit without boundaries and resist being contained or confined to another's whims, schedules, etc. At some point, you're going to have to come to terms with what you want out of life as far as relationship(s) go, since you've never been married. Men don't necessarily need to be tied down until their mid-40s, but are better candidates for it when in their early 50s. My advice to anyone else in your position is to be careful of getting married, unless you find that is what you want after spending a year or two going steady. You can bet that this woman has reflected or pondered on this issue too. If you can get more truthful information from her as your friendship continues, you will learn more about what she really thinks about her situation as per even wanting a steady or marriage.

Why? They are less likely to know what they are doing.

Maybe, maybe not but ride her for all you can till it doesn't. Take every piece you get since it is one more than you will ever have.

aklim - I am surprised that you are so simple minded. Look at yourself in the mirror too. You think you can ride all you can with any women, think again! They will eat you alive before you even know it.

My advise to the OP is to STOP. Egging him on is going to hurt everyone concerned.

What has he got to lose? His virginity? Sometimes there is no need to make things more complex than there needs to be. Nobody is saying he has to fall in love and pursue her to the ends of the earth. Ride it for all you can. Stop when you want.

Well, if you wanna play, you got to be prepared to pay. If you don't know what you want, it makes me have to evaluate it for you so I'd rather deal with someone who knows what they want as opposed to a lot of the games the younger people play.

Only if he lets himself get hurt. As I said, nobody is saying commit to the person. If it starts to become bad, run. As they say, Marry Mr/Ms Right but have fun with Mr/Ms Wrong till then.

I don't get the embarrass thing. What's to lose? Cherish the opportunity, you won't always have that.

You know, we are going about this the wrong way. We can't make an informed decision on what to do without some naked pics. When you post an ad for the sale of a car, you should put up pictures of the interior, engine, etc, etc. So share the wealth.

One thing not mentioned here so far is the simple mathematics here.

Possibly this woman - and many if not most - what ALL unattached women over 50 y.o. must surely understand is that mathematically under typical circumstances most American females long outlive their male mates, who often as not take less care of themselves, viz, diet, nutrition, exercise, alcohol consumption and so on. Not to mention (in many cases, the stress induced problems caused by the demands and exertion of their jobs. - Though this last factor is catching up a little bit now because most WOMEN too have the chance to get and succeed at jobs like that too, and the health problems that can come with it.

If this works, (in the instant case) the woman who is NOW 55, hooks up with a guy about 39, statistically she WILL likely have a mate for 30 years.

But if she went for a guy her own age, or older (if she can find one unattached and available!), she is only likely to have a companion for 10-20 more years at best .

Look at the denizens of ANY "over 55" type of retirement community, and you would understand that INSTANTLY.

I am certain this woman knows that, as she is an intelligent, successful professional that worked hard and surely has given it a passing thought at the very least.

Obviously this is practical and a bit cold blooded but bottom what woman wants to become an early widow, or lose her love early on when she'd prefer to have him with her and healthy for as many years as she can?

And also, knowing that men place HIGH value on the visual, ALL older women are acutely aware that their "value" decreases yearly as they get older and their looks fade and gravity hits their bodies harder. The beauty and cosmetics industries rake in billions of dollars, every year, because of that, if any proof is sought in support of this position.

I would say it is practical. One thing to mention is lifespan. IF this relationship works out, he could find himself taking care of a sick person for a longer time and having to make decisions. Not a dealbreaker but something to consider as to whether it is worth it or not.
