Clergy
Okay, so now I'm one of them. I figured Kerry and a few others might be interested.
I've been a licensed minister for some time now, but as of tonight (or last night as this is the wee hours of the morning) I crossed over from being laity to clergy. And no, I'm still not wearing a dog collar. Although I have thought about wearing one to reunions or just for the fun of it (and acting oblivious to the fact that I haven't always worn one). In fact next time I buy parts from someone, I should show up that way.

*EDIT* Oh great. Captain of industry and civility, Skid Row Joe, deleted his post, originally #2 and since I didn't quote it, my post is sitting here looking like I'm criticizing martureo, telling him 'thanks for sharing.' Although maybe Joe deleted it out of a uncommon moment of good sense, as he had dumped on the OP, saying, approx., that he trusts clergy less than anyone else in the world. *END of EDIT*
Thanks for sharing there. I go by the vibe. Some clergy I have felt very good about, others, not so much. Just as with police officers, some people who want the position really shouldn't have it. But there are good cops.

What is the relationship you have established between clergy and police officers, that would cause you to compare them here? I see none.

It's not hard. Abuse of power. Some cops want to lord it over people, to bully people, and to make time with cute girls they stop for citations. I knew a rather fetching lady who went out with a cop under such circumstances, trivia note.
The clergy who should not be clergy, for starters, are the pervs who use the collar as a cover to get close to people, to gain their confidence, to act as though they are channeling God's will, etc. That is, those who abuse power. The common theme is people wanting the position for the wrong reasons. And, in both professions, some or more likely many want the position for the right reasons. I really had to explain all of this?

That's all. He is not COMPARING cops *TO* clergy though... That's what I think he's saying. (And I have known cmac for many years personally so I doubt I am wrong here).

The fact is (beyond the obvious) there is no connection between the missions of the two professions, as it were.

He chose a poor example. I can't think of even one other profession, so to speak, that it could be compared to beyond the obvious. In short, it's a waste of time trying to do it. Clergy, is it's whole own set. There is nothing like it.

GOOD LORD. Would you get a hobby or something and stop pretending like there is any point in discussing anything with you?!?
You posted second originally, saying you trust clergy less than anyone else in the world. I responded that I go by the specific clergyman and added that, as with cops, some want the position for the wrong reason, but that didn't mean all cops were bad, and left out the obvious connection, and not all clergyman are not to be trusted. No need to get all magnifying glass analytical about the connection between cops and clergy, it was OBVIOUS what I was saying and JimB got the gist of it. Now here we are, with a page full of crap, poorly responding to martureo's OP and none of it makes sense cause you weaseled out of your first post. What would Warren Buffett say about that?

I see a strong link between policemen and the clergy.
Not only do many countries throughout the world have a strong link between law and religion, but in the task of daily governing of morality both professions meddle! The police tend to tackle one end of the spectrum of human morality - or the causes there of - whilst good clergy deal with it all.

Actually in KSA there is the Religious Police. Some of these "police" are teenagers, but they have uniforms and weapons, and if they catch you, where they think you are, when and where you shouldn't be, they will take out electrical cables and literally WHIP you back to the mosque.

Nonsense of course there is. In your country and mine and the country in which I live there is a complex relationship between Christianity and law. If you ever have to go to court you are usually asked to put your hand on the bible and swear that you are about to tell the truth. You may opt not to do so or you may opt to choose a different way of ascertaining that you are about to tell the truth - but you should be aware that you are likely to be judged under Christian values. This is just one example of many.
