The roads that Tyler Talked about and the roads that regularly exhibit poor construction planning are FEDERAL road construction projects. In fact if you want smooth traffic flow, pay the money and get on a locally designed and built tollway. Of course that didn't help Tyler because those roads aren't available everywhere.

How do you explain that the worst roads are in California, a state clearly run by liberals, also with road projects from the federali's?

Frankly driving in LA is quite pleasant by comparison.

I
Agree about the la freeways. You know youre going to be delayed and everyone else knows it too. Theres not nearly as much running to the front or cutting people off, and less horn blowing.

The mix of driving styles in Dallas And Houston is a
Big part of the issue.

I've only driven in TX once and it was in/around Dallas while at a convention and it was whacky! I think it falls just short of Boston, which I love, though. There aren't any straight streets, nothing is perpendicular and there isn't any rhyme or reason to the one-ways.

Plus you have to remember to make sure that your sunroof is closed when approaching Dealey Plaza...

I think the fact that CA has 38 million people in 163 thousand sq miles and TX has 26 million people on 663 thousand sq miles has far more to do with who built the freeway system.

Then again, the facts are not as fun as blaming liberals or the Fed.

No you dont want facts, you want stats twisted for your own needs. Continue your research except do it based on population centers. The fact that one state has more desert and low poulation density area than the other skews the raw data. Of course skewing the data in your favor is to be expected.

I lived in the D/FW area for years and then decided I had had enough of it and moved 170 miles north into Indian Territory. Traffic here is nothing and people tend to measure distance by time and not miles. Such as: How far is Tulsa? About two hours is the normal answer and not 100 miles. How far is the next town? Ten minutes and not eight miles.

How far is Dallas? Three hours. So if I need to go to a big city I spend less time in traffic that if I lived in LA just going into downtown.

Twenty years ago I knew a guy that was transferred to Dallas from LA. He bought a small farm 70 miles north of Dallas and drove in each and every day. He said he still spent less time in traffic than he did in LA.

But that was then and this is now. Anyone who has driven through McKinney, Texas on US 75 during the past few years knows what a mess that is, but then Central Expressway in Dallas used to be much worse until it got revamped.

In a related theme: How old am I? Why, Sonny, I can remember when Central Expressway in Plano was only a two lane road. And we were danged glad to have it! Why, before it was paved it was dirt. DIRT, I tell you! These kids today, you try to tell tell them how easy they have it, and........

What was I talking about? Oh, yeah! Them danged Kids! Well, Sir, .......

Well, the answer to that is easy. California was in the hands of Republicans for too many years and they let the system go to pieces. Reagan once said the only mistake he ever made was spending too many years as a Democrat, and now the voters in California have come to understand that the biggest mistake they ever made was turning the government over to the Republicans.

It will take a few years to correct the damage the Republicans did to the state, so hang in there. Things will get better now that the Governator is gone.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience Tyler. I don't think it has so much to do with Texas, it's bad everywhere. We have had the additional challenge of huge population growth over the last couple of decades - like from 8M to the 26M that DM quotes above. And most of that growth is along the I-35 corridor, in San Antonio, Austin, and DFW. Add in that I-35 is the main corridor for NAFTA goods. I am in the habit of using state highways as an alternative. They may or may not be faster, but it is a low stress experience and the time to complete your trip is quite predictable.

Where on 290 did you have trouble? I frequently come blasting in from Hwy 6 to the Katy/NW Houston area and it's like a freakin racetrack. Inside the loop though, you can never predict. Houston's economic success is it's own problem; the population growth there is incredible.

But it's not just here. I was in Philly two or three weeks ago on business. They closed three of four lanes on I-95 to work on signs. During rush hour on a work day. The backup was unbelievable.

I did the same thing as your friend 27 1/2 years ago. It was the best thing I ever did for my family and myself. Now, my office is 22 miles away in town and it's sport driving to and from. About 20 miles of winding and hilly, lightly traveled road in my SLK, and then a couple of miles on a four lane loop. Driving to work is sport as opposed to frustration.

Before moving out here I was driving from lake arlington to addison airport everyday and it was murder. Now, the national guard couldnt get me to move back to the metromess.

Honolulu is scrappy, it will get it back . . . after all, can't build any more roads.

Worst Corridors - INRIX

The INRIX annual scorecard reported Honolulu drivers spend an average of nearly 60 hours a year sitting in their cars, up 10 hours from the 2012 scorecard. Commuters experienced a 30 percent increase in travel time due to bad traffic conditions, according to the company's website. For example, a 30-minute drive to the USS Arizona Memorial would take an extra 10 minutes, and an hour-long bus ride to Waikiki would take 80 minutes.
