No matter how much exercise one is getting, it still comes down to how much you eat. If you're working like a thrasher hand all day, but at the same time constantly stuffing your pie hole, you will gain weight. Basically you eat and you burn. If you don't burn all you eat, you will gain weight. I know that is oversimplification, but I doubt that anyone will argue that.

I have my best luck keeping my weight under control when I am not eating much in the way of carbs. If I eat chicken and fish, along with an occasional steak along with reasonable portions of fruits and vegetables, staying away from bread and potato's for the most part, I can stay pretty well under control.

Yeah, if I were to let myself, I could live on baked goods myself. I have to fight the urge.

I promised myself I was going to start eating for health when I turned 50. I learned as much as I could about nutrition and slowly started making changes in my diet. Fruit, veggies, healthy fats, fish, etc. Without really trying I virtually gave up red meat and most dairy. Between July '09 and March '10 I went from ~250 to 195. When the winter clothes came off no fewer than a dozen co-workers asked me if I was OK. One of the girls in the back office was actually in tears because she thought I was sick. I explained to everyone that I never felt better and that so many silly nagging things disappeared. In the past few years I've had several people ask me to help them change their eating habits and I'm more than happy to help

mytmousemalibu, good point about walking. When I started University here in Arizona, started bicycling. I was 180 pounds and dropped to 165 by the end of the semester which is four months approximately.

When I was in High School, my heaviest was 215 pounds and 5'-11". I had been trying to loose weight for at least five years. Then the biology teacher one day said there is two types of people that graduate High School: those that become heavier and those that loose weight. Yes, know she was wrong, but scared me enough next semester look weight training. Still struggling, until someone said you can't be digesting food and building muscle at the same time. Being the first class and at 7:30 in the morning, decided to eat a breakfast that wouldn't last. Being I have a medical issue with low blood sugar, was hard at first working out on an empty stomach, but I toughed it out and got accustomed. I would have a bowl of grits, and then yogurt snack after the class after weight training. I grew to love grits, and thinking about them is making me hungry for a big bowl of them, topped with brown sugar. In sort, don't be scared of carbohydrates, as if used right, can be your friend!

Now I am 140 pounds, and at my lowest was 135 pounds. Had a mid 20's growth spurt so 6'-2" tall. Current weight loss is from being sick for over two years and something has changed in my body. Despite all the sitting I do, I can't seem to put weight on.

I considered what mytmousemalibu said, and think it is because this past year and a half, been walking a lot more, to the light rail, light rail to class, and between classes, plus the program I got in a year and a half ago is in a four story building, so a lot of stairs. Also, been cutting back on Cliff Bars due to finances, but going tomorrow and picking up a good supply. I figured out I am just not getting enough calories and might explain my sleep loss and odd sleep patterns.

In summery, thank you so very much mytmousemalibu for this useful thread!

calories in less than calories out

You will lose weight if you burn up more calories than you put in your mouth. If you add exercise, it speeds the process, and then you develop muscle which is denser than fat and weighs more than fat....or something like that.

I lost my Dad July 24th last year.
Less than a month later, my ex low self esteem GF dumps me because some guy at a bar smiled at her.
I started doing 60 minutes on the elliptical, drinking less, and eating healthy.

I lost 30 pounds, 5 inches off the waist. It's mostly stayed off --- up and back down 5 pounds.

It's a weight loss program that I hope none of you ever go through.

FWIW - I cut my consumption and watched what I ate, and have gone from ~270 to ~190. Haven't hit the gym in a while, nor have I been on my bike....

42 waist to currently a 36 waist, but 36 are a bit loose on me now.

Read the book "Wheat Belly".

Just say no to bread of all kinds (including and especially my beloved tortillas), starchy vegetables like corn, potatoes and rice. Eat all the meat and leafy green vegetables, eggs, dairy you want. Forget calories. The weight will fall off and your blood sugar will plummet. High cholesterol is not caused by diet in most cases. Old science, no longer as valid as once thought. It's all about blood sugar whether you're diabetic or not.

Just stop eating, as I hit 30 I'm discovering I just can't eat anymore. So I'm going to save money and just stop.

How bout a pic?

I weighed 165 out of high school 40 years ago and stay between 180 and 185 all the time. My metabolism rate stays somewhat wide open during waking hours. In addition, I walk a lot and walk fast when I walk.

I just have to ask, as don't get it, but what is the deal about bums? I can understand breasts as our primal brains think about passing on genes, but legs, ankles, hips, thighs, and bums?

I believe in women's rights, so I respect and don't notice.

In the end, it is about moderation. I tried no wheat, and every time has no positive results.

It's about respect and not objectifying. Woman aren't just sexual intercourse machines! Women are equal to men, and should deserve the same.
