No ;

Stumpy was a guy who didn't follow the laborious safety rules .

My buddy was the -only- guy they could find to do the brush changing job, the guy who trained him was elderly and wanted some time off .

Some people grasp safety easily, many don't .

I do now after the -one-time- I failed to use eye protection and got steel chips int my then one good eye .

They're still there and the pain filled misery I went through then made me a believer in safety .

Stumpy was lying in a hospital bed mostly naked and was crispy .

I have to wonder if keeping everything running while changing the brushes is worth it. I’m sure there’s a lot I don’t know, but risking one’s life for the sake of industrial efficiency is perhaps a bridge too far.

Post Dangerous Jobs

Well ;

The generators rotor weighs like a ton or so, it's massive and so takes a while to stop it then another while to get it back up to speed again .

Apparently the brushes are in gangs so changing them doesn't interrupt the current flow unless you failed to air check your rubber gloves for any tiny pin holes, cracks or leaks .

Notice ~ I'll never offer to do this job but for those who are trained it's supposed to not be a big deal .

Sort of like riding Motocycles ~ I do that at imprudent speeds and it's only ever hurt when I was run over or crashed .

I guess if it was a $100K plus a year job and you didn’t think you could find anything else approaching that, and you were religious about the safety protocol might not be a problem. My hands have been within a half inch of a tablesaw blade many, many times and I’ve still got all ten. I want to have them when they put me into the casket.

Post Safety Knows No Season

I'm with you there ~ I grew up in a different age / time so I knew plenty of adults that were missing fingers or worse .

I've heard stories. Yikes.

Once on a large job in Palo Alto we had the main job table saw on the front porch. It had an unusually low ceiling for some reason, about 7 feet. One day one of the subs was using it and he cut the hell out of his hand - I never learned what the injury was but we all knew about it. There was a trail of blood spatters on the ceiling in the same plane as the blade (?!). Not a few spatters either. Some of my fellow employees with the General were actually complaining that they spirited him out of there in a hurry so that we, the General C., didn't know how bad the injury was, like they were trying to cover it up.

I said that it looked to me like it was serious and of course the first instinct would be to get the hell on the road to a hospital while stopping the bleeding on the way.

My old man was a long time carpenter/general (working) and he had all ten on his death bed. One of the few safety tips he gave me was to keep the table saw blade only high enough to protrude slightly above the wood you were cutting. That way if you did screw up it would likely only be a small flesh wound.

Good to hear that ~ so many simply automatically do the opposite of what they're told thinking it makes them 'free' or some other foolishness .

When I was young more than a few broken down old men tried to warn me about foolish things I did, I didn't listen close enough although I _did_ remember every caution / warning they gave me and as time went on I realized my errors and am still alive if badly broken now .
