When do you get old?

Today on my 66th birthday I am noticing I don't seem to have the "spunk" I used to. Mowing our property-something I have been doing for years seems to be more difficult. We have just taken on a large project in a "fixer" home so I am starting to wonder if I have the endurance to finish it. Plus wife needs more help with things. I still do what I did-it just seems to take more out of me. So how long can I keep going? Please tell me for a while.

I don't know when but I'm doing it again ...

Old is always twenty years older than your current age. Just take care of yourself and get regular checkups.

I take very good care of myself. I have 2 neighbors in the upper 70's and they have slowed down a bit since I have lived here so I see it in the cards.
I guess I'm preaching to the choir (I always wanted to say that) QUOTE=P.C.;4299806]Old is always twenty years older than your current age. Just take care of yourself and get regular checkups.[/QUOTE]

at 74 I don't have the stamina I used to have but I can still do many things. I am careful not to fall down for fear of injury. If I get tired I take a break. On the autocross course though I think I am still as quick as I was. I am also still good at games.

I guess I'm not as tired as I thought I was. Been hitting it hard on our new mid-century modern (makes it sound better) getting painting and exterior work done before the next 2-week surge of rain begins Thursday. Once I get going (takes a while on a cold morning) I go OK. This house has 60 years of handyman hacks and neglected maintenance. Getting rain gutters installed next week. House never had them and it shows. Plus the PO did an exterior "refreshing" to get it ready to sell and they cut a lot of corners.

For me at 80, what I notice most about aging:

1. balance issues keep me from doing roof work. Seems to come and go as I get older.

2. Too much glare during night time driving. Possibly due to cataracts slowly forming.

3. More picky about people I associate with... don't want to waste time with a'holes

4. This year, 2023, have had 3 types of cancer and 1st heart issues ( frequent PVC's ). Hoping to stretch this roller coaster ride out for at least 5 more years spent with a few good friends. At the end, if possible, plan to take a long sight seeing trip & die somewhere nice to be. Also to avoid the drama that peaks near end of life.

5. My suggestions:

, keep doing the work, you'll probably do it better than most contractors... might take a little longer but still very satisfying.

Have checkups more often, skin, colonoscopies, if possible whole body PET and MRI of brain. Nuclear stress test, etc...

Have a fairly healthy diet. One of my favorite recipes I call the ' one to one ' pico. Basically chop up 1 of each tomato, onion, bell pepper ( not green ), 1 bunch cilantro, 1 can of rotel for flavor and 1 can of black beans rinsed to remove salt. I used this diet to lose about 30 pounds 20 years ago. Still haven't gained back the weight.

Had the colonoscopy last year. I "try" to eat good but it's the holidays, BD, wife's BD so on and so on. I plan on doing as much work as I can. I know there are good contractors out there but they will not respond to small jobs-at least here or they charge $90 per hr. I would never hire a handyman to do work. I can do almost everything that needs to be done but am hiring workers for moving stuff, digging, clean up etc to speed things up. Spent 5 days straight climbing ladders all day and still feel Ok but legs are tired. Was removing a bunch of funky 50 year old 8' heavy fluorescent fixtures from the 16' shop ceiling today. Have to move the ladder 2 or 3 times for each one rolling around an old water heater to brace the ladder feet.
There is much work to be done in a tight, cramped crawl space. The house needs to be replumbed from the water meter to the crusty faucets. There is no shut off so I have to call the city every time I shut off the water but I will install a shut off when I replace the water main. DVW mostly needs to be replaced. They did replace the sewer line to the street-I can see new grass where the trench was. Bright note: The sewer line to the toilet in the garage is still connected so it will work again. And everything is overgrown in ivy and blackberries. This property is several buildings on an acre and everything needs work. But it will be worth it.

Some years ago I noticed I was slowing down. During a routine check up it was discovered I had some blockages in my heart area. So these got unblocked.

Time spent in bed was five days. Time spent in rehab was six months. And it was weird.

First the time in bed killed my leg muscles. So I had to get those back. Then I had to learn to cope with the extra energy. I would overdo it one day and be exhausted the next.

But eventually I learned how to deal with the new me but my energy level now is far superior to what it was before the tune up.

I am 35 and have made some health decisions already. I am an active guy but job related stress and blood pressure are off the charts. No alcohol, reduced salt and cholesterol -- been 2 years or so and never feel better. I don't think I am "old" by any means but some stuff is way easier to start before its too late.
