After watching LSU and Oklahoma go three-downs-and-punt for most of the game I can only come to one conclusion.... USC #1 in the country

"...watching the tidy bowl...er...I mean the Sugar Bowl.

Their strenght of schedule was much tougher than USC's and they won an extra game. The AP now feels that they need to express thir opinion and I'd say that it is only an opinion an not factual. It wouldn't have mattered who LSU played. The #1 defense in the country would have dominated USC like they did to the rest of the teams. |

What SOS ???
When LSU plays schools like Monroe Tech and what are the other schools ???
LSU and OU played a snooze-fest which was only made interesting by the fact that everyone wanted to know how it felt to play in a second-ranked bowl. Pete Carroll is smarter and a better coach Nick Saban. USC is better coached than LSU. USC had fewed penalties and made fewer mistakes in beating Michigan than either OU or LSU had in their Boring Bowl. Norm Chow can outcoach the entire LSU staff, with half his brain tied behind his back. Leinart is a far better qb than Mauck will ever be. Leinart will play pro football. Mauck will be pulling people's teeth. The way Mauck was throwing the ball, he was lucky that he only got picked off twice. He should have been intercepted at least twice more. Against USC's secondary, and fast defensive line, Mauck (or White) would have been reduced to playing catch-up all night long. And LSU was lucky that they were facing that Heisman-fraud White. White can't move and can't execute...hell, he couldn't even pass the ball. Neither LSU nor OU could have beaten USC--not even on their best day. OU lost to Kansas, by a huge score and then Kansas could not even beat Ohio State. LSU's strength of schedule was a fluke. The one computer that put LSU ahead of USC by 0.16 of a point was the computer ran by a UCLA professor that has admitted that he strongly dislikes USC. So go figure. At the end of the regular season BOTH the AP and the Coaches Poll put USC #1 in the country, by large margins. At that point it was abundantly clear who the #1 team int he nation was--USC. The coaches were then obligated, by CONTRACT, to vote the Boring Conference Series winner as the #1 team. IF the coaches were not so obligated, last night the coaches would have also voted USC the #1 team, giving USC BOTH the AP and the Coaches Poll. We are #1!

You can argue all you want but it's not going to change the fact the the Sooners were number one and LSU was number 2 by the computers caculations and that's all that counts.
You also have to give credit to LSU their defense played very well and left me amazed by there speed. This is why I feel a playoff system is needed or they could just save time and give Nebraska the number one ranking every year

O.K., how's this for strength of schedule?
The Tigers and the Trojans shared one common opponent - Auburn. USC beat Auburn 23-0, on Aug. 30. LSU was defeated by Auburn 31-7, on Oct. 25. Who has the better team?

BenZ-LGB,
You are a dreamer in every way. Here is LSU's schedule: Louisiana-Monroe W 49-7 -- Arizona W 59-13 -- Western Illinois W 35-7 -- (7) Georgia W 17-10 -- Mississippi State W 41-6 -- (24) Florida L 7-19 -- South Carolina W 33-7 -- Auburn W 31-7 -- Louisiana Tech W 49-10 -- Alabama W 27-3 -- (13) Mississippi W 17-14 -- Arkansas W 55-24 -- (7) Georgia W 34-13 -- Postseason Date Opponent Time/Result Audio Sun, Jan 4 (3) Oklahoma W 21-14 LSU played a much tougher schedule than USC. I don't know where you are getting USC's strength of schedule but it is behind LSU's. LSU's was 29th and USC's was 37th. http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/polls?poll=4 For the exception of Washington State, USC played a bunch of unranked nobodys in the regular season. At least LSU played 5 games against ranked teams and three of those games were against top 10 teams so don't give me any BS about USC's schedule. Suganami, Uh, LSU defeated Auburn and they also beat the crap out of the only Pac 10 team they played. The score against Arizona could have easily been a 70 point spread but Saban doens't like to run-up the score and after the first half he puts in all the third string players. LSU was beating Arizona 38-0 at half. Heck, they were beating Louisiana Tech by 49-0 at half and for the second half Saban told his guys not to score any more points because they didn't want to make LA Tech look worse than they already did. |

Dreamer, USC was only #1 in the AP poll. You must be a screaming liberal because these are the only people that put USC above LSU. LSU was #1 in the Coaches poll and got 60 votes vs USC's 3 votes and in the AP poll USC got 48 and LSU got 17. When you average the two polls LSU got 77 votes as #1 and USC only got 51. The USC fans need to get off their high horse or really understand how lucky they are to have a screaming liberal press that would ever give them a #1 ranking. The only National Champions are LSU and that will be the official record in the record books. There was and is only one crystal ball that is given away per year and LSU received it on Sunday. USC can gladly cut their trophy out of the newspaper and post it on the wall. Last edited by super SEC; 01-05-2004 at 06:54 PM. |

Super SEC,
The coaches were obligated to vote LSU as #1 by contract. When they were able to vote who they really think is #1, they voted for USC. Even still, three of the 63 coaches broke the agreement by voting the Trojans No. 1.

The coaches that were interviewed said they were going to vote on the best team regardless of the "agreement" with the BCS. Who do you trust to know more about football.....someone who has never played the game or a coach that teaches the game and has played the game? I'd bet on the coaches every time!
The AP was trying to make a protest against the BCS and it was too bad that LSU had to suffer their protest. The AP poll reminds me of the O.J. jurors potest. They perceived the L.A police department as evil and wanted to make a statement against all the perceived injustice to their community by deliveriing not-guilty verdicts. Too bad only 17 of the AP voters have a conscience. Coaches try to install a higher value in kids and it is too bad that three of those coaches had little regard for a system that they voted on and agreed on prior to any National Championship game. Let USC play a conference championship game and then come back and talk. The fact is, both LSU and OU played an extra game against the best teams in their conferences. LSU won and OU didn't. Had OU not played in that game they would have been undefeated going in to the Sugar Bowl. They would have played LSU because LSU would still have been second in the BCS and OU would still be first in the AP polls and of course USC would still be third in every poll. USC's strength of schedule cost them big time. It's really too bad so many of the teams USC played were so crappy. We may not be having this discussion today if the others weren't so bad. Fact: LSU has the #1 defense in the country and only allowed an average of 10 points a game. They crippled the #1 offense in the country. LSU played a tougher schedule and more ranked teams than USC. LSU stopped three of the best QB's in the country this year and made each and everyone of those QB's have a horrible game. A great defense will make a great offense look bad. National Championships are won by defense. Last edited by super SEC; 01-05-2004 at 06:52 PM. |

" That is why the coaches' poll, pre-BCS Bowl had USC #! in the country, even before USC whipped Michigan. As Suginami points out. three coaches voted their conscience, instead of the contractual obligation, and voted for USC. Incidentally, do you have any evidence, and not just feverish imagination, that the AP poll vote was a protest against the BCS? If that's the case, then the Coaches Poll, before the bowls, must have also been a protest against the BCS, right??? BTW, to compare the AP poll vote to the jurors who acquitted O.J. makes no sense whatesoever. You really ought to think twice before making such outlandish and baseless statements. Ypour other statement, that USC's SOS cost them big time is equally baseless. As mentioned elsewhere, the difference between USC and LSU in the computer polls was less than 0.16, and that's only after a UCLA professor used his computer ot screw USC. The 0.16 margin was hte smallest in BCS's tainted history. How do you figure it cost USC "big time." It should interest you to know that the AP poll has been around a lot longer than the coaches poll. To dismiss the sportswriters, and their poll, as you did, reflects a lack of knowledge of the history of college football. Coaches may know more about coaching teams than sportswriters do. But coaches are subject to biases and petty jealousies as in, "...I can't vote for USC because it will make Pete Carroll look better than me..." And do you really think that coaches always instill good values in their palyers? Some do, but many don't. Why do you think UCLA was involved in so many scandals involving ethical violations? Because Toledo was a hands-off coach. Let the Bruins try that same BS with Dorrell? Same thing in Miami, many of those players were borderline criminal thugs. So don't tell me that coaches always instill good values on their players. And please, don't even try to tell me that by voting their conscience the three coaches who did not vote for LSU have somehow diminished the moral fiber of their players. Pleaseeeeeeeee !!!! On the subject of Nick Saban getting paid more, what does that prove? Saban gets paid exactly one dollar more than Stoops. what is Stoop's claim to fame? Getting bushwacked by a team that could hardly keep up with Ohio State and then looking flat and slow footed against an LSU that, until ONE computer gave it a slight edge over USC had no chance of being in the Sugar Bowl. Way to go Saban...Anyhow, Saban will be paid a lot more than Carroll, when he dumps the Tigers and leaves the bayou to join some NFL team. Pete Carrroll reminds me a lot of McKay, he loves college football and will stay as long as USC makes it fun for him to stay. On the subject of computers, the 0.16 edge that allow LSU to squeak past USC was made possible by one computer-geek. A UCLA professor who has no love for USC. If a conference rival is up for a bowl spot, then you should not be allowed to vote. By the way, who do you think is a better team? OU or LSU? If you said LSU, then you went against the much-vaunted BCS system that consitently put OU ahead of everyone else by large margins. So much for the BCS computers. If you said that OU was the better team, then you di dnot watch the Sugar Bowl, or the Kansas State games. In both games OU looked like a Div. 3 school. Look, if you want to say that you don't like USC and that you will never admit that USC is the better team in the nation, that's fine with me. USC is not everyone's cup of tea. I think that the Sugar Bowl should have been played between LSU and USC--and I think, and many agree with me, that in the end, USC would have beaten LSU. Final score: USC 28/LSU 7

Why do you think the #1 rated defense in the nation would lose to USC. The #1 offense in the nation could barely score on LSU. I really don't think USC would have a chance against LSU. They played a Pack 10 team and beat them worse than they have been beaten in 30 years. I think LSU would do that to the rest of the conference too. A few years from now, I think USC may be a better team but not now. You are a dreamer if you think USC could have score 28 points against LSU. Heck, they could barely do that against Cal.
"On the subject of Nick Saban getting paid more, what does that prove?" Wasn't my comment. I could care less what Saban makes. You need to read comments and attach them to the appropriate person. "Ypour other statement, that USC's SOS cost them big time is equally baseless. As mentioned elsewhere, the difference between USC and LSU in the computer polls was less than 0.16," O.K., you use the computers when they favor USC but when they don't favor them you don't make reference. Once again, LSU's schedule was ranked 29th and USC's was ranked 37th. It was probably more of a spread than that but its what the computer used. Sure the computer weighed the difference between the two teams as a .16 difference and like I said that difference cost you big and the strength of schedule is what cost USC a chance at the title. The margin was narrow and USC needed all the help they could get. Not USC's fault but it is just the way it turned out. Now, USC sounds like a bunch of whiney babies because they were excluded from a system that they agreed would be the National Championship system. I don't hate USC. I just don't think they are the same caliber as LSU this year. Believe me, LSU and OU would much rather played USC than each other. I think LSU could play OU and beat them 9 out of 10 times and USC probably 8 out of 10 times. We will never know so with that said.....I congradulate USC for winning the Rose Bowl. Ten reasons why USC would beat LSU in a head-to-head match up: !. Pete Carroll 2. Norm Chow 3. Leinart 4. Colbert 5. Williams 6. White 7. The USC offensive and defensive lines 8. Poole 9. AP poll 10. Coaches poll (pre-bowl and unhindered by contractual obligations)
