Do you think he really is stoned? I could do with some of that - I need to calm myself down before I start on the welding!

Amazing project. You just inspired me to go find our first merc, a 200 W123 1984. My Father sold it without informing me and I really wanted to keep and do a full refresh on it.

Hope I find it so I can start a thread like yours LOL.

Best of Luck.

Good luck with the hunt - I'm looking forward to the thread. A thread on the hunt might be good too.

When I get this one done I hope I get the chance to move on to my W123.

The W123 is much nicer to work on than the W201 I feel - there's a little more space around everything.

Where are my manners?

It isn't every day you get recognition from the site sponsors - despite what many might think of as madness!

So thank you Pelican (although it would have been nice to gloss over the camshaft cock up!)

Yeah true. I just want to find my old W123. Told my father to see if he still has the guys number so I can track it down.

a labor of love

Stretch, that car has so many neat things about it. it encourages me to

recussitate the RUR RUR 190E. getting to the starter finally, so it can rur rur rur
instead of RUR RUR!

i think the trans will survive and clutch was all there was wrong. (hydraulic restriction)
but the flywheel ring gear, strange, its too blue and too big. getting one soon.

wanted to thank you for all the pics and advice

Not much happened today

I've painted the hard fuel lines and the brake line for the rear wheels

I thought I'd already painted the clamps but found I hadn't so that delayed the process of refitting these lines that run the length of the under body. Tomorrow is the day...

Rubber parts got a good clean today - that aerospace303 stuff is really good. Some people say they've only ever bought one spray bottle of the stuff - that it lasts forever - I've nearly finished mine already!

The underside of this W201 is weird. Most of the underside is coated in the usual Mercedes rubberised junk that I hate so much, but for some reason the transmission tunnel has been left with just paint. A few rust bubbles have formed =>

They have now been sanded away / wire brushed away and I decided to coat this area with old fashioned bitumastic under body treatment.

I don't really like the bitumastic stuff all that much but it is easier to apply than the whole POR-15 option which would have meant degreasing a bit more intensively. This is hard to do on a car on axle stands so I've gone for the easier option.

As much for me as for anyone else...

...position of hard lines under the car

They'll go back on looking a bit cleaner

EDIT - found picture of the front before I took it all to bits

In case you are wondering why there's a vent line running from the petrol tank all the way to the front of the car, there's a charcoal filter stuffed under the front wing (LHS) that connects to the air intake manifold so that nasty gasses get burnt away.

Flex discs going on

I'm just replacing the nuts on the bolts for the flex discs

I've got two OK looking front flex discs and one OK back one - no new parts this time re-re-re-cycle

But those buggers are going back on with copper ease

Removal of the old vibration damper fitted to propshafts with manual gearboxes is simple - tap with hammer and punch

Old one is still OK looking

Part number 201 411 30 47

The propshafts I have however are a bit problematic =>

The four speed front section isn't going to be used - it is too long with a five speed gearbox fitted.

The five speed front end that I bought looks sort of OK but both the rear sections of both propshafts have slightly notchy universal joints

I think I might be fitting the second hand section that came with the 5 speed propshaft I bought for the conversion just to see if everything else is working - such as the 5 speed gearbox and differential after the rebuild work I've done.

I guess I'll have to take it off soon to fix the UJ notchiness - I'll practice on the old four speed section that came off the car though.

Fitting shifter rods to the manual transmission

I had a bit of a surprise today - my shifter mechanism is different from the ones mentioned in the W124 and W201 Haynes manuals

Here's what it looks like "up top"

Reverse is back and to the left and the 5th gear is top and to the right

I was expecting to see something like this when looking at the linkages underneath

But instead I got this

(Found in WIS chapter 27 information but no mention of which bit attaches to which)

After a bit of arsing about I worked out the following relationships

Connections on gear box are

I think the rods are the same

Part number for the big bushings at the gearbox connections = 000 992 11 10

Part number for the little bushings in the eye ends of the shifter rods = 011 011 59 92

Early shifters have Reverse down and to the far right. Later shifters have reverse down and to the left. Also the early shifters push down to get into reverse, the later shifters pull up to get into reverse.

Reverse up and to the left would only be the 16V dogleg box.

Did the trans and shifter come from the same car?
