I assuming that you already know how to replace the timing chain...but check the timing first...you may not need a new chain.

The main reason that I have replaced the rear muffler with a Mercedes Benz part is because Pennsylvania has an annual safety inspection and most inspection stations do not allow an altered exhaust...

I think a compression test is in order...

First my thought would be to do a compression test. If you have a cracked head, it would most likely show low compression on one or more of the cylinders.

You may also want to try removing the oil...

That's a hard starter....

The 1987 300D Turbo has a block heater in it. Look underneath for the plug and see if the heater still works. It makes a world of difference in the starting on cold mornings.

Be prepared to go slow...

The 240D is probably one of the most reliable diesels available. They run forever and they don't have complex systems to troubleshoot. The engines can easily be rebuilt using new pressed-in steel...
