Hood pad reprise
Glued the hood pad in my brother's 75 300D back up a couple nights ago, and checked it again tonight while adjusting the IP linkage to get full travel.
We glued it in a couple years ago when he painted the car, but used the wrong adhesive (probably 8060 instead of 8090). It has been drooping badly, and finally started to come out, a real pain since it's new and otherwise perfect. A couple light coats over most of the area, wait a bit, stick it up, and it's held so far, in spite of being applied over what was on there. We didn't take it out nor did we clean the hood, just applied a small amount of fresh adhesive. I think this means that if you put a hood pad in and it won't stay up you can simply apply the 3M super trim adhesive 8090 and you can fix it properly. Peter

Surface prep, meaning cleaning off the old pad and adhesive as much as possible, is key to keeping a new pad from sagging, as much as using the proper adhesive. As an aside, I'm waiting for a new pad to arrive, but last week it was raining here and it was "interesting" watching the raindrops turn to steam on the surface of the hood . . . that's can be good for the paint!

Diesel hood pad in a gasser??
I've "heard" that the diesel hood pad is a "better" pad that fits in the same place. More insulation, higher temperature rating, etc. Any opinions on the subject?
My old pad sort of dissolved in place. I used a vacuum cleaner wand to scrape it off the underside of the hood and collect the residue at the same time. I have an '87 W124. 260E to be precise.

So far as I know they are all the same -- the one on FastLane has the big silver insulator showing on the one for the TE.
The new pads are better than the originals -- a sort of woven face, a thick foil aluminum insulator, etc. Fit VERY nicely. The pad on the 75 is still staying up.... Peter
