E420 Power Loss

My 1997 E420 seems to be only running on 4 cylenders. I has lost a lot of power does not like to rev.

I am not sure what happened, but here are the symptoms.

The car refused to accellerate when going up a hill at about 50mph. I floored the accellerator and the check engine light came on. If I try to accelerate (somewhat hard) the check engine light starts flashing.

I took it to a Mechanic in Atlanta who read the codes.

PO308
PR307
PO305
PO306
PO300

PO410
PO173

He seems to think its the O2 sensors. My regular guy (in dallas) thinks its the Air Mass Meter.

Before I start throwing parts at it, I would be grateful if anyone can provide input.

This car should fly when you put your foot down.

Regards

Al

Here's what the DTCs . . .

mean:

PO 173 = Fuel Trim malfunction; bank 2

PO 300 = Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire detected
PO 305 = cylinder #5
PO 306 = cylinder #6
PO 307 = cylinder #7
PO 308 = cylinder #8

PO 410 = Secondary AIR Injection System malfunction

The fuel-trim code could be a bad O2 sensor and/or MAF.

Misfires may associated with bad cables/igniters???

AIR could be a bad vacuum line???

E420 MAS and O2

So it looks like both Mechanics may be right. Any idea of where I can get a MAS at reasonable cost?

Where is it located? I looked at the housing around the air filter but could not see anything.

Many thanks for your quick response.

Regards
Al

Why would the MAS only affect one bank of cylinders?

If E420 is like V-6 E320, MAS is located in large plastic duct leading from air filter to engine - black plastic cylinder about 3" diameter with plug coming out of side. Cost $300+ or maybe cheaper on ebay.

With those codes, you may be better off going to MB dealer and have them check it out properly.

E420 Update

OK took it to the mechanic yesterday, we thought we cracked the problem as it appears that the hose that sites on the rear of the right hand (from the rear) cam cover and leading to the throttle body was pretty much schredded. We replaced this but the car still runs like crap. I think it is running really lean as it drives reasonably well at below 2000rpm but turns to crap once you rev it (the check engine light also flashes). Still getting the misfire codes. Any more ideas?

Jim F was right

Forgot to update the list, but jim f was on the button. It was a plugged cat, once repaired the car flew again.
If anyone has a similar problem, note that you dont get hard codes from this problem, but if the tech has a device that can read the live data, it should give you readings from the 02 sensors that will show the problem.

Thanks again.
