What do you think of this e420 project on ebay?

He says he has all the parts but no time to put them in. To me - for a project like this - getting the parts is usually the most time-consuming part of the job!!! This sounds fishy.

If it's nearby, check it out. You have little to lose. Take good inventory of what it needs. If you have access to a similar car, first study the parts that should exist in the damaged area, then you can see if indeed all parts are available. Check the condition and fit-and-finish of the car otherwise.

Red face Kestas

I agree with Kestas. If you have time go look at it first. To see it in person and get an idea of what is needed and if it is worth your time and trouble to repair.

As for my opinion on the project, If you want a "fixed" up benz for less money up front and a customized look then I think you found it. This could be a good looking AMG replica once you are done with it.

Just remember you can buy an intact once for $5k-$8k more. Why would he install a body kit before fixing the front end?

With the salvage title it'll probably be worth $5000 after you fix it. Offer $3000 tops.

get something clean and straight

There are cars you just don't want to have...
...not for cheap, not even for free.

Like my former mechanic used to say, it's worth to spend a little more in the beginning, if it buys you something clean and straight.

Look at it and listen to your inner voice, I'm sure you'll be happy to walk away from it.

In my opinion, the motor looks like it has a lot more than 85k miles on it judging by the valve cover burn. Does carfax still work for salvage vehicles? Make sure the odometer hasn't been tampered with is my suggestion.

Stuff on the valve cover isn't a burn, it's what the protection stuff they spray on everything before it goes on the ship turns too, like a brown varnish.

If you really want it, I'd go along with the $3000-$4000 range, and tell him he can keep the candy assed body kit.

I have no interest in the "AMG" ghetto kit.

But I might be interested in getting the car cheaply....which could be costly.

But is the e420 a good car?

Nah.

Not especially good, the W210 (1996-up) had way too many of their share of problems for a Mercedes Benz. These were the first E classes with lots of headaches.

Watch out for rusty/about to collapse spring perches on them if you want one.

The '94-95 E420 would be a better bet, less problems overall, (butcheck the wiring harnesses) generally

I really like the 210 chassis in general and the E420 in particular. Those motors (M119) really are pretty tough motors, same as what the earlier E420 had in them. They are more fun to drive than the later E430, IMHO, more of a "peak" in the torque curve that makes it funner to drive. The E430 is powerful, but a flatter torque curve. I wouldn't turn either one "down" so to speak. YES the spring perches should be closely scrutinized, they like to break especially on the heavier engined E420 and E300Diesel. Any way you can get an experienced MB tech to look it over with you??

He thinks 15,000 free of salvage title and in perfect shape, and the person really wants it,maybe, you pile lots of money into something like this and this is what you get.Not a good move unless you intend to keep it for a very long time, look at it as a parts car, would you pay that much?Only if it was a rare car and parts very hard to come by! j-n-t
