Before you change the alternator, make sure the problems are not related to the voltage regulator that is attached to the alternator. I was told I needed a new alternator by a mechanic at the cost of $400. The fine people on this forum helped me out and I only replaced the voltage regulator at a cost of $37.

As Benzman said, your alternator could be just fine.
I suggest you try a new volt regulator.
10 minutes of your time with a screw driver and you'll be back on the road and will avoid the contortions required to replace the alternator.

ok so i got the old alternator off anyway. my new one does not have this part on that my old one does have. this part is a little square box on top of the alternator with a little wire connecting to a different part of the alternator. Is this part the voltage regulator? on this little part it reads. 2.2pf 110v- 0 310 000 062
should i transfer this part to the new alternator and put it in?

Heh, yeah. That's the voltage regulator. If the new alternator doesn't work, you will know where your problem lies.

That does not looks like a voltage regulator to me.

Here's what the voltage regulator looks for your car:`
It goes at the back of the alternator

ok now i replaced the alternator with a good voltage regulator and the car ran for 7 miles then died in the middle of the road. Is there anything else that can cause this besides a bad alternator or regulator. The car wont even start with jumper cables connected to it. Right before it died, the antilock light came on and rpm arrow went all the way up and back down. I replaced the OVP relay with a brand new one a few months ago so that shouldbt be the problem.

You said earlier your jump started the car on several occasions.
Bad, very bad for the OVP.
1) Check the fuse on your OVP.
2)You have a multi-meeter? What is the battery voltage with the car not running?
It should be +/- 12.5 volts. If not, disconnect the battery from the car and put it on the battery charger until it is fully charged.
Once the battery is fully charged, reconnect the battery cables.
Start the car.
With all accessories off, engine running at fast idle, voltage should be between 13.8 and 14.2 Volts. If so, your charging circuit is functioning properly., your problem lies somewhere else.
Check all battery cables, battery ground

I took the battery to autozone and it had no juice in it. So, I had it recharged and then tested. It tested as a good battery. Then, I put it back in the car and drove it home from the parking lot that it was stuck in. It started up itself and made it home fine, but it was only two miles away. Now it's parked in the garage. I looked at the OVP relay and it looked okay. I put a different 10 amp fuse in just to be sure. When the engine is off, the battery emits 12.4 volts and when it is in idle it emits 13.8 volts. It still starts up on its own but I notice that the engine sounds really strong then sounds really weak and shakes a lot, then it goes back to being strong, then weak, so on and so on. It does this when driving too. I would stall then get power back. It's been doing that before I had problems with it breaking down. Do you suppose the spark plug wires need to be replaced? I didnt replace them when I did a tune up. I've been trying to get this car ready to sell. If I can get the engine to stop losing power periodically like that while driving, It can pass a test drive and make to the home of whoever buys it. I think I can make it to a mercedes mechanic as long as no accessories are on, but I don't want it to sit there for 2 weeks and to pay the $90/hr. labor charge. That's why I do all the work on it myself, even though I've never worked on cars before I had this one.

thanks
