Is this ignition harness new?
Bought the car in December, and now with warmer weather, I'm looking under the hood.
Do these pictures suggest the wiring harness has been replaced? The one picture shows a parts tag. Could I be so lucky? 13 year old car with 198,000 miles - guess it had to have a replacement to last that long. Your thoughts are appreciated

I'm not sure - the last pic, shows a date of '93.
The second pic, has vacuum lines - why the ends of the vacuum hoses get brown, is a mystery to me.

For piks & info go here
http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/M104WireHarness First pik is at thermostat. Second pik is coil connector. Easy to id bad insulation. Cable to computer behind battery has the id tag you need. Also check battery "B" harness. Small wires from solenoid and oil pressure also have same problem as main engine harness. |

Look for a white plastic tag
On the harness at the battery area should be a small white plastic tag with a build date for the harness. Note: MB had all the new harnesses built by a different firm (begins with a D as I recall). The tag is a held on with a zip tie.

Thanks - pictures to come
I took a look at "battery Area" for the tag. Don't think I saw it. I'll post pictures for others when it come back from the independent shop.
Getting the error codes read - among other things - may need the ETA.

Took it to the mechanic
Well - the wiring harness is "old"
There is no tag on the cable near the control box - thanks for the suggestion. Up by the thermostat - the mechanic showed me some broken wire shields. Yep needs replaced. Will replace myself (or try to) and will post pictures - this will be months in the execution - weekends are mostly booked with family outings.

A March 2008 thread on the http://mbca.cartama.net/ forum indicates the harness can be purchased for about $500. You should also check with Phil here at Fastlane.
Although I didn't have to R&R my harness there was a time I thought I might have to do it and read many posts regarding the diy. It appears to require patience and a long afternoon, but is not technically difficult or requiring special tools. Bob PS R&Ring a Benz wiring harness gives new meaning to "Plug & play". |

The cost of the harness depends on the model. Mine was listed at 890. Not having the money at the time, I rebuilt mine. Took three plus days to unwrap, build, test, and reinstall.
The actual install was fairly straightforward and easy. If you purchased a harness and removed / replaced at the same time, it would probably take 2-3 hours. Key is to start at the ECM plug by the battery and work to the ends. Simply unplug one connection, move out of the way, reinstall portion of the new harness and replug new connection all the time working to the various loose ends last. Make sure the attery is disconnected first. Take lots of BEFORE pictures incase you get interrupted and forget what is where. As to the ETA, it is plagued by the same wiring problems. You can either by a rebuilt/new, send yours out for rebuilding (requires car to be idle for several days), or rebuild the short harness yourself. There is a DIY article on it somewhere in the forums. In addition, you can order the ETA pigtail from MB for roughly $20. Its an overseas order so it takes some shipping time.
