My 1986 420sel is in the shop even as I type this! My question is does anyone know the price of a new or rebuilt "Fuel Distributor".Mines is being replaced and I would like to get some idea of the replacement cost.

Are you sure yours can't be disassembled and cleaned?? Or is that just "too hard" for your mechanic? It's really not all that hard on a CIS system...

They aren't that hard to get from a junk car.....I have a spare (don't know if its any good) for our 300E.....hopefully I will never need it. I don't see why a fuel distributor would ever fail....so long as you keep the car driven and with good gas/cleaners.

Thank goodness I have a good relationship with my indy. He offered to replace 2 failing monovalve diaphrams in my car for free when I had them in for service. Its a 5 minute job, but I said okay, if you feel like it.

He tried to charge $130.00 for the reseal kits each, and I laughed in his face. Thankfully the shop forum banner was showing the $40.00 special for them, which I was able to quickly pull up on my Iphone. I think he was so embarrased, must be second nature to markup like that, that he comped the monovalves for me. This was after shelling out nearly $800.00 for new front bearings on the convertible, and oil cooler lines for the Defiant.

go to his page for Mercedes Parts. He has CIS, K-Jet, D-Jet fuel distributors. I think they run around $4-500 after you send in your core

Actually only a specialist trained in Bosch fuel injection show crack open the distributor. It has set tolerances and if you go poking around in there they will be thrown off


but, like I said give John Hervey a call, great guy.

$40 I think $20 is pushing it. This is the the kit, right?

Hey there.

If you look around, you might find a less expensive brand. I found one made by 'Python', and professionally rebuilt goes for less than a third of what you're talking about + core. Might be a typo!

www.carpart.com - they claim to do repair as well.

Also, sometimes there are other rebuilders that can handle things they don't normally.

Take for example restaurant equipment rebuilders. They do all manner of rebuilding of small internal parts; ordering generic internal replacement parts out of huge catalogs. they re-shim, re-valve, re-seat, re-bush, re-just about everything for motors, pumps, valves, you name it.

I've had many a repair done at machine shops, expecially NOT job shops, but those that actually make entire products. They often like the challenge, and helping out local folks from the community.

Steep labor charges? I didn't feel comfortable doing either of those jobs, and this guys knows what he's doing. His labor rate is 80 bucks an hour, so what are you getting at? 6 hours of labor for both jobs sounds about right to me.

I take it you don't go to mechanics often? I try avoiding it whenever possible, but finding a good one who doesn't charge around 100 bucks an hour for labor is difficult, at least where I am.

You wonder why I'm getting into domestics. Cheap mechanics, and parts ARE EVERYWHERE.

tell you what, I have one that I will give to you for free, works fine...all you gotta do is pay for the shipping....assuming it's a KE CIS system that is....let me know

the answer is, however, $2400 new, around $450 rebuilt and $40 from a well chosen 300E wreck in a U-Pick-M establishment. That's what I did, the $40 version, and replaced my good one with this one...no difference, turned out to be other things. So, I have a perfectly good CIS fuel distrubutor just sitting here doing nothing other than getting in the way...

I'll second TheDon! I just finished replacing the rubber donuts, air distribution hoses, intake plenum, injectors (and seals) and still needed a fuel distributor for my 87' 420 sel. I took TheDon's advice (found through the handy forum search) and called John. I found him to be very helpful, very reasonable on price and he's a fellow Texan to boot!
