Starts up and quickly dies (86 190E)
I have made some progress with this car but still not right. Orginally, it was not getting any fuel to the distribution but now it does. The car starts up and then quickly dies. It will however, run a bit longer with a plug out..It doesn't matter which plug as long as one is out. Just kinda depends on its mood. I have checked and/or changed the following; plugs (bosch), plug wires, cap and button, fuel pump, fuel filter, idle control valve is working, battery is new. I have check fuel pump flow (one liter in under 40 seconds). Fuel pump relay is good. OVC is good. Fuel lines are good and clear (even frame lines). O-ring under FD is new. Vacuum lines are ok..Tank was flushed. Timing seemed to be ok. I have also tried adjusting the lamda tower screw and it doesn't matter. The car reacts the same..
I've tried and tested just about everything that I could think of. Now I'm out of ideas. Where should I be looking now? Ignition module? Any ideas are welcome..!!! |

I still think it is likely you are getting too much fuel, which is why it will run a with a plug out....
I still think you should try introducing a vacuum leak by disconnecting a hose or two.... See if you can make it run my manually leaning it out this way. If so, it could be leaky injectors, or somebody screwed up adjustments trying to get it run before you got it.

I didn't mention anything about the CPS or IGM because you stated that the engine would run if you put gas in the intake, and now it even runs with one plug out. ![]() Anyway, here a link that discusses Crankshaft Position Sensor testing. thanks for the link Dave...hope your trip went well
![]() The reason I'm shifting my thought to ignition (other than just tired of smelling like gas..ha ha) is because we have went complete through the fuel system and so has the previous owner. Maybe it's not the problem anymore. we have corrected quite a bit but just seems to still missing something. As I type this, wonder if the cat might stopped up. that would kinda make sense. I haven't checked it. That might explain why it tries to run a little with the plug out. Its not build that much pressure.Hummm whatcha think about that..??? |

The CAT did cross my mind, but not knowing what's been done to the car up to the point when you got it makes it hard to diagnose. But maybe running with a spark plug out is an indication, I don't know since I've never had a bad cat (on a car anyway). I find it pretty weird that you took a plug out and started the car up...I wouldn't have the nerve. At this point I would try to disconnect the CAT and see if it runs. Keep us posted, Dave

Don't know that you can test the crank position sensor; this was suggested to me by a tech with experience when my car started giving similar trouble: would die on the highway, restart and die almost immediately. Replaced CPS, no more problem. Other than the contortions required to R&R, not much to it.
My car is a V-8 but probably they all have them since the ignition and fuel inj sys are similar. |

Or, just install a new CPS and see what happens. ![]()

Sorry guys been really busy and haven't had time to check everyone suggestions. Momma wanted new hardwood floor in our room..ha ha ha I have to make a confession on the starting with a plug out..It was on accident that I done that..I was trying to bring the piston up TDC to check the timing..ummmm forgot to unhook the coil.. (I hear you laughing Dave).. Anyways the pic of the cable you sent me Dave, is the same one I found pinched underneath the power steering...so you maybe on to something there..I didn't realize what that was..where is a good place to get MB parts online? |

If you get a chance, pull the CPS connector off at the Ignition Control Module and check the resistance of the CPS cable. Mine is 851 ohms cold and 924 ohms at operating temperature. Also check the ac output while someone cranks the engine...should be just under 1v ac.
