C43 Tranny "Jerk"
Hey guys, yet another small glitch on my C43. Gee...eitheir im just not used to AMG's or this car doesnt like me much.
Start the car in the morning, let it warm up for about 2 mins and back out of the driveway in reverse....upon putting it into D gear, when the tranny engages forward it a big slam type of jerk/nudge upon engagement. It almost feels like someone has just "gently" rear-ended you when it does this type of gear engagment into D. It Does not repeat this after even if I try to put it in R or P and then into D immediately again. It seems to just be this initial time when going into D the first time of the day especially after reversing. Is this a software issue? Its not a flex disc issue as they are new and that would be a constant "clunking" in any gear, all the time. P.S. records show tranny was replace in 2007 approx 20k ago. I have also had the fluid changed by my indy a month ago just so I know when it was done for my own benefit. Thanks again!

On the older cars that can be caused by the bowden cable being too tight and so the trans thinks it should be fully engaged right away.....but I have no idea if it works that way on a newer one.....

Do you know what tranny is in there? 722.(?) From what I remember the early cars and trannys weren't that stout....but a new one 20K ago should still be good...
![]() Did you change the fluid to something' better' than stock? Like a synthetic? Redline ATF or the like? |

Using any fluid other that either MB fluid can cause that problem.

The tranny is a 722.6 5-speed from the SL600 that was adapted to this engine.
Should I know have an MB dealer re-change this fluid out or go back to my Indy and find out?

Make sure that he used MB special fluid> if he did then have the trans adaptation erased & re-adapt the trans.

My auto 1987 300E does this sometimes. It doesn't happen all the time but it happens when I go from park to reverse. Any idea what it is?

I will respectfully fully dis-agree with your statement 'Doc' ![]() BTDT with several high HP MBs like my 92' 500E and former 97' SL600 Sport and 99' E55. Plus 3 C43s that came thru the shop in the past. If he has the stock fluid in there then its def worth a try. In fact, the 500E has had Redline in it for 10 years...and shifts perfectly still at 155K. Every manufacturer wants you to use what they brand themselves...and while it makes sense from a corporate standpoint, it doesn't take into account that there are products that exceed that are not OE. |

Hi all - no solution here, but my 1993 400e has done this - only when cold - since I bought it in 2004 with 100k miles. No other trans trouble.

Jim, using Redline ATF in a 1992 500E is like using regular Dexron fluid! They don't require special fluid.
On 1996 & later cars with 722.6 trans..regular Dexron fluid doesn't have the additive package that is required for those transmissions. Have seen 10+ 722.6's ruined by not using either 3353 OR 4134 (DSH or Fuchs) ATF.

Just a quick note. I have Valvoline Max Life in my 722.6 - and it's been in there for 10 000 kms + with no issue.
The literature says it meets the Mercedes standard required for 722.6. I've also heard of several others with good results. |

You need to get someone with SDS and scan your car - I've seen a code in the ESM (electronic selector module) cause the tranny's to bang going into gear. Had one on a CLK230 do this, and after clearing all the codes on the car after fixing a check engine light the trans went into gear smoothly.

I have exactly the same issue with my 1993 190E 2.6, have been unable to find the problem so far. The bowden cable theory is interesting, I was thinking vacuum perhaps but who knows. Might even be a torn mount under the car or suspension issue. Least likely I think would be a worn out differential. Until something lets go I suppose I may never know. I already looked at it myself and had 2 independents try to assess it to no avail.
