Anyone know if I can separate the transmission from the driveshaft without removing the entire flex disk from driveshaft? Can I just disconnect it transmission output-side? I ask because I struggled doing it this way and I am wondering if I can pry it enough to make space or will I need to take it off completely?

(I have a pry bar now if needed).

Might have a source for governor FYI.

You should be able to pry off the flexdisk. Its just stuck. Just be sure to note it’s position and orientation for refit. Once the prop shaft is disconnected, it will slide back a couple of inches, but not enough to work without taking off the disk completely.

Why do you think you have to replace the whole governor? I would think you should only have to replace the two stripped gears. Does the governor look damaged?

That seems like a possibility to me too - but on the other hand the ATSG is full of just swapping the governor for a new one - there isn't a how to repair / rebuild your governor section. But I bet someone does it. However for speed I'm guessing it will be quicker to swap...

If it was up to me, the choice of replacing two gears that are obviously shot and cost less than $10 compared to replacing a $200+ part that is probably not broken is easy. Its pretty hard to screw up a govenor. You already have to pull the rear cover to replace the drive gear, but once thats done you're finished with the hardest part. Replace the small gear on the govenor itself, button it back up and test it out. If the govenor is bad, you'll know right away. Going back in to replace it is easy enough to justify the time spent.

Just my opinion, but you might want to give it some thought.

makes sense. I'll call the dealer and ask how much just the gear is. Maybe its 20-30 bucks in which case no brainer.

Only issue I have though is if I need a special tool to remove the gear off the governor?

Flex discs / donught rubbers are a real pain to get off in my experience.

Let us know if you do manage to get a cog separately from the whole governor assembly as from the Russian EPC

But if you look at the RU ILCATS pictogram Army posted it looks
like there's a "Roll Pin" with an interference fit that secures the Gear.
Number 635 in the RU pictogram.(RU is calling it a "Clamping Sleeve".)

Mercedes in CONUS is calling it a "Roll Pin" # 001481003509 $1.20 USD
MBspecialist web site does not recognize the part (Yet)

I can't tell from ps2cho's picture.

The smaller gear on the governor itself is held on with a snap ring. It then just slides off. I paid about $15 for the large gear and $5 for the smaller one. That's dealer prices in Hawaii. I doubt it will be more for you.

Just buy a used transmission for 50-100 dollars and take the parts you need.
I think that it is possible to get just the gear but it is not worth the time. Also check with a local independent or salvage yard for parts. I have 3-4 transmissions in my shop. It is more about the time to take it a part than the parts. I would probably sell one though to a guy for 100 dollars though.

Alright I see how the gear comes off. When you say big and small gear what are you talking about? The main output gear? Or is there another gear I am not aware of?

My question is for that gear.. Do I need the whole shaft or can I just replace the gear on that one too?

The large gear is the gear (#448) on the output shaft behind the rear cover of the transmission. It slides off but may be held on with a snap ring (#445). Pay attention as you pull the cover. There are several spacers that come first as well as the gear that drives the speedometer. The parking prawl comes out too. You will be best to replace the seal for the rear cover to prevent leaks after reassembly. This is pretty cheap too. The smaller gear (#636) is the gear on the governor itself. It too is held on with a snap ring (#637). That’s following the diagram given by Army. Nice one too, wish I’d had it when I did this. But my transmission is a bit older and different in that it didn’t have the lever to hold the governor. It had a circlip that was a bear to get off. Plus no one mentioned it in their descriptions, so I had a two day struggle before MBDoc, told me about it. You’re almost done with this and will soon be back on the road.
