1992 400E window won't go up
Hi All,
I have a 1992 400E and the driver's side window just started acting up. When I push up on my switch the window went down and wouldn't come back up then after shutting the car on and off a few times the window FINALLY came up. Well just the other day my girlfriend went to put her window down on the passenger side and mine came down too and it will NOT go up. What could be the issue here? Is there a relay causing the problem or is it possibly my switch. Any advice would be much appreciated. The back windows seem to work fine. Thanks! |

Its probably a switch problem.
With the car off, if you push the button to go up, do the lights dim? That would indicate the motor is drawing power but nothing is happening if thats the case..regulator or something in the door? If no lights dim or anything, then switch might be bad. Either take out the switch and swap it with a different one and see what happens or jumper the connections...

Thanks for the info. The lights do dim with the car off and there is a clicking from inside the door. Can we assume motor? I can order a motor online for about $125

You should probably take the door apart before ordering anything. Lights dimming = motor drawing current. The motor might be jammed, or some part of the regulator stuck or a clip broken. Take the door apart and see what exactly broke.

window issue
No worries. If you have to replace the window regulator, I would normally suggest a good used one for 1/2 the new price, but not for the driver's window. That window motor gets used so much that buying new whenever possible would be the best option.
BTW, it's more difficult to take the door panel off, especially if it's the first time for it to come off, than it is to replace the window motor. Even then, if you are careful to first note in a diagram where the clips are located at the back of the door panel, and use that as a guide to evaluate whether you have the panel free, it's not too bad at all. You only have to slide the panel up less than an inch to free it from the "upside down J-hooks" that hold the panel in place. Resist the temptation of pulling up on the door handle exclusively or you'll likely break the arm rest away from the door panel. I prefer to push up from under the arm rest instead. Use the plastic molding tools that can be had for less than $10 to slightly pry up the edges of the panel before trying to slide the whole thing up. Remember to take out the 2 bolts: one at the top of the door handle/arm rest combo and the small one at the edge of the door lock trim piece. Lastly take out the ash tray. When you've got the panel off and after you've installed the new motor, you might as well and replace the plastic liner that is glued to the door and protects the door panel from the wetness during the rains to come. Al

Thanks for the info. The panel was tough to get off but I finally did it. Replaced the motor. And the window still does not work. I can hear a clicking from inside the door even when I do not press the switch. When I press the switch the lights dim but the window does not move.
Could there be a short somewhere? Is there any areas to look at? All of the other windows work. Could it be the panel where all the switches plug in? Maybe this is shorted out? Any thoughts would be helpful. I really need to get the window up. Thanks! |

UPDATE:
Replaced the motor and no luck. Still the window wouldn't go up. I then touched the two wires that connect the window motor to the power of the car and the window went up. I reversed the wires and the window went down. However when I push the switch nothing happens and when I hold the key in the door in the lock position the window will not go up. All of the other windows work fine. Also, when the window is working while I have the wires switched, and I press and hold the window button, the window stops moving and freezes. The switch is not corroded and I changed it with the passenger window switch and no difference. I also switched the relay around and no luck. Does anyone have an idea of where the problem lies? Maybe something common on the w124? |

Long shot but check the convenience relay. Under the rear seat drivers side. You can remove the cover hook it back up and you'll see which relays supply power to that window when you press the switch. If you think that's the issue you can try and clean the relay by bending the braided wire and pulling away the small metal piece then lightly file it. And to remove the relay the middle tab by pulling it out the two side connectors unlatch by pulling the piece to the side.
