Access to the governor on the 722.3 is on the side of the transmission - I read about trouble getting it back in though!

Governor Removal

Did you read about the guy who drilled a hole in the side of the trans tunnel to remove the governor?

Well it looks like I found the culprit!.. I will know for sure in the morning when I drive it from a cold start.

Check this out, just my luck, the one thing I didn't pull apart, bites me back. I didn't check it out mainly because I didn't have some new modulators at the time. Then I picked up a few to keep on hand, and totally got side tracked on other projects and forgot to swap it out. Shame on me!

I now have one of the new style modulators in there with the new pin design. And this trans absolutely shifts like a dream! Nice quick firm shifts, not jarring and uncontrollable, and a super fast reverse!
1-2 is perfect, 2-3 perfect, 3-4 perfect!
Kick down when you stomp on it is correct and relatively fast.. I keep in mind this isn't a electronically controlled trans, so mechanical systems do take a slight time to react.

I hope it all good from a cold start, but this time around it feels like a MB trans should feel like. We will see tomorrow.

Trans is fantasitc! Drove to work today, shifts like a new trans should!
Give myself a pat on the back, first sucessfull MB trans rebuild.

So i started with a trans that had questionable history
I replaced all the clutch packs with new friction disks
New B1 and B2 bands
New reverse B3 clutch pack
Replaced the K1 drum due to damage from missing bearing
Was able to restore the pump shaft on the lathe from K1 damage
Freshened up the seals, and servo actuators
Made a few special tools.
Car now has a new lease on life. Lets hope for anothet 400,000km

So now i have a spare 722.355 which has no reverse, and a slight flair from 2-3.
I think i will do a full rebuild on that and keep as a spare.
And with that do a whole video on the rebuild process
And make up a parts list to get before hand

I just finished rebuilding the transmission on my 1986 300SDL and reverse is slow to engage and shifting through the gears is rough when it's cold. The plastic pin on my modulator was also broken, but I just replaced the pin and not the modulator. Where did you get the new style modulator? Was it used from a newer vehicle?

The new style modulator was brand new. I have a few I've stocked up on.

Initially I was confused about the old style and new; not knowing if they were interchangeable, and also knowing that MB also has different types (red top, green top, white top, black top). But the new style versions are the revision up from the old ones. MB does not sell the old ones any longer. The new versions have a completely different pin setup as well.

Pics or it didn't happen.

O, and while you're at it, jot down a few notes and we'll call it a how-to.
