new to me 92 400E. any new buyer tips?

just purchased a NW no rust 1992 400E sedan with 180K from the son of the original owner. Silver over black leather. Title was still in dads name lol.. I'm sure it's a familiar story dad bought it new and drove it for close to 20 years. Then it was passed on to the son for the remaining. then I got it..
Ive owned a few pre owned Mercs and know enough to ask the forum about must do new buyer maintenence.
It just had a new ignition tumbler installed recently just before purchase. The old one locked up which ended up being a nightmare and it sat for close to a year before purchase.

What kind of maintenance/service records came with the car? The first thing I'd look for is to see if the wiring harness was replaced. P.S. Nice stable of cars ya got there.

I would find a good indie, have him take a look. It probably needs everything, all fluids, trans service, oil/filter, radiator flushed and refilled with Mercedes antifreeze, spark plugs, maybe plug wires, etc. You can easily spend a couple of grand bringing it back. The sign in my garage says: "There is nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes"

I think it was 92 and 93 that had the biodegradeable rubber covering on the harness, not sure about 94-95. I had to replace the wiring harness on my two '92's. I think there should be a tag on the harness back by the left hand module with a date on it?? Or have have an MB mechanic see if it has degraded.

If you really want to keep and improve the car, then do what Anziani suggests. You're starting from scratch.

Check for pesky leaks at all window and trunk gaskets ,this will end up being a naisuance when not addressed.

Every M119 powered W124 has the wiring harness issues along with the Electronic Throttle Actuator. The harness should have a date code on it right behind the CAN box under the hood. If your date is 98 or later you should be good as its been replaced but if its earlier it will fail. Same with the ETA but the code for that is on a sticker that you can see if you remove the airbox. New the harness runs about 5-700 from the dealer and I highly recommend buying new and the ETA is somewhere in the $1500 range IIRC. Those can be found used but you must be sure you get the correct one for your car since the ASR/NON ASR engines used a different ETA.

I recently sold my 400E in the same color combo as yours and I really miss it. Its a very special car and its 80% of a 500E at 20% of the price.

Also remember that BBA Remanufacturing rebuilds Throttle actuators and its wiring. They did a actuator on my CE320 a few years ago. It recently started acting up and they repaired it for free. Good company (in the Boston area?) And definitely get a Benz harness, n othing from eBay.
