300SE winshield washer nozzles-don't work
Hello, my 1989 300SE has non functioning windshield
washer nozzles. The motor/pump works fine but the water just barely drips out the ends. I've been told that these nozzles are heated? Anyway, the point of my querie is that I do not want to begin reaming the openings without first being sure that I will not destroy the nozzles in the process. It could be that they have to be replaced anyway. What is your opinion or experience?? Thanks Denis

Denis,
A small diameter stick pin is what you need. It will/should clean out any debris which might be plugging the orifices. Once done reaming them out with the pin, and the water is flowing good, you use the same pin to aim the washer nozzles. Also, double check that the braided hose that feeds the water to the nozzles isn't pinched or leaking.

I have noticed on my 126, that if I used the orange or pink RainX washer fluid, that it leaves behind a crusty buildup on the nozzles, that needs to be cleaned frequently.
Be careful when sticking a pin in there, as the plastic is surely brittle after all these years. -Larry

This is a bit of a sidetrack, but maybe useful. I recently had to rent a new Ford Taurus while my '86 300E was in the shop. When I used the windshield wiper I noticed that instead of a stream that basically hits just a small area of the windshield it sprayed a cone of fluid that covered most of the glass with a copious amount of washer fluid. Does anyone know if the late-model MB's use something similar, and will they retrofit the older cars, or can something better be easily adapted from another car?
Thanks, Gary |

In Line Filters
Look for small in line filters, I had the same problem with my 280CE, until I found them and removed them.

Actually an "El cheapo" 99 cent fuel filter put inline with the washer fluid hose, is a good idea. Ever since I stared to re-fill washer fluid years ago, I have wondered what to do about the "floaties" in the resevoir - installing such a filter would surely prevent those uninvited guest from entering my nozzles.
Unfortunately, this idea wasn't mine...matter of fact it was after a good 20 some years that a German master mechanic gave me the hint. And why not? We filter every other darn fluid in our cars...might as well do the washer fluid too. Have fun! -Larry

You might also consider the source of the problem - dirty reservoir tank. Pull it out and thoroughly clean inside. There are 3 electrical connections(U. S. model) that need to be removed + 2 coolant line connections( 2 rubber hoses).
If you get the 2 lower elect. connections crossed, you'll see the cleaner fluid coming out at the headlights instead of the windshield. |

Good Ideas
The reservoir is also a good idea. Mine is clean but the lines from it may not be.
Thanks Denis

once the whole system has been cleaned out, possibly treating your car to some new nozzles, ensure you use only clean, demineralised or distilled water. I use only pure drininking water and this helps no end in keeping the system clean. Good Luck !
