Just spent about 3 hours outside detailing the car with my newly accquired orbital buffer. After work I decided to stop at Pep Boys and check out some Meguiars products. I ended up buying an orbital buffer (waxmaster) for $29.99 which I thought was a deal, and picked up some Meguiars crystal system steps 1, 2, 3 (cleaner, polish, wax) respectfully. The buffer made a tremendous difference--much better than by hand. The car looks like it just walked off the showroom--thanks to Lee, and fellow members.

I have always been worried about using a buffer on my paint work, but if it works, i think i'll go and buy one!!!

Buffers work great for minimizing arm/shoulder strain but I've never found them to be able to better what you can do by hand with proper time, technique, and lots of effort. That said, they certainly make it easier/quicker. You will need more than a few applicator pads/covers. Orbital buffers do a great job and are much safer for the finish. Radial buffers can swirl/burn a finish much easier. Stick with an orbital.

I have never used an orbital to apply or remove the wax - just to put on the final buff. What steps should I follow if I were to remove wax with the orbital? With all the towels I use for hand wax removal I am afraid that the wax will build on the pad and burn the finish (I am referring to those little streaks of wax that appear after one wipe).

Its hard to say exactly when to change pads on an orbital but it NEVER hurts to switch to a clean pad. The rule I go by is when you notice the removal taking longer/more time/effort than when the pad was fresh. You probably will not burn the finish by over buffing with a wax removal cloth, just smear lots of wax around...

Get the Porter-Cable 7424. But change to the velcro backing plate by Meguiars and get velcro backed Meguiars pads. I use mine for polishing and removing paint problems and the final buff. I usually apply wax by hand. www.coastaltool.com has it for $109.

The word on "Orbital" Buffer is that it is impossible to burn the paint. Rotary buffers are the paint burn culprit.
