Need Help Detailing A W124
Hey everyone, I'm currently gathering the right products to restore 92 W124 and needed some help from the experts!
I know Zaino is the best product for the paint and is first on my list to purchase. I however don't know of any products which can be used for the lower plastic portion of the car. I know the surface of the plastic is painted and I'm wondering what type of polish/wax I should used to get it perfect. The second part of the car I'm not familiar with is the black plastic portion of the front and rear bumpers. It is slightly dulled and lighter in color. I do not want to cover it up with a dressing, but would rather use a plastic polish to bring it back to its original look. I know Meguiars has two products out, Plastic Polish and Plastic Scratch remover. Does anyone have experience with these products, and which would work better for the application. Does anyone have a better product they've used for the plastic, opinions are great! Thanks everyone for your help! Really can't say enough about this site and the people who are a part of it.

Answers on detailing a 124
I hope I can help with your questions on your 124. I use to have a 1986 300E that I showed in national competition, the 124 is a great car.
My opinion on the wax is to first use Meguiars Cleaner Wax and follow up with a top coat of Meguiars Gold Class...This combination on my Smoke Silver 300E was awesome. People would ask me how I got my car to look so "wet". You should wax the lower part of your car with the same product you chose on the top part. As you stated....it's painted the same color. On the dark bumpers and dark trim (black/grey) I have had great results with Mother's Back to Black. The more you wipe it the less shine you will get...so you can control your end result. I hope this helps! kytown2

Hi Placo1
you may wish to 'clay', removing the minute critters attached to the paint- the clay is very very kind to the surface vs. any cleaner wax or abrasive rubbing compound (see Lee's detailing dyi for tips) I've clayed and can vouch for its effectiveness in prepping for a show-type finish. I've Zaino'd also and can also vouch for it's outstanding results. I believe that all the premium wax and polish products on the market offer premium level results-- personal preferences vary. If your front and rear bumper pieces are a bit of a challenge, I'd just replace new ones. I believe these pieces are very easy to replace and cheap too. All the bumper black/restore-type products I've used seem to help a bit, but once these pieces are weathered its difficult to truly get them back to 'new' (no maintence) again. Good Luck -fad |
