Well if we're talking strictly Highway then yes windows up is better. You could use the Econ mode then.

Although you could use the windows down to your advantage. When it gets too loud then you know to back off a little. It'll help keep your overall speed down

Call me crazy but I think you should be able to get like 35mpg out of these things. I mean just a few tweaks and you can grab a few mpg here and there. So I was thinking the following

Synthetics in the oil, tranny, and diff
Take the cross bars off the rack
Intercooler
correct tire psi
bigger overdrive gear, either when rebuilding tranny or at the differential
normal driving
preheat the diesel fuel to increase the spray pattern and density
plug the egr vacuum line so it doesnt recirc exhaust gases
I mean Elsbett claims to have gotten 68/90 mpg on a 190D with his modifications

any other ideas

If you can arrange your trip so you always drive downhill your milage will be much greater.

i was just thinking.....
doesn't the 300 weigh more that a 190?
doesn't a 190 have a smaller aero profile to poke thru the air?

i know no one wants to slow down. heaven forbid someone get to the red light before us and waits longer but today i squeezed 30 mpg from red by staying at 100kph to no more than 65mph. cool night. light traffic passing me like i was standing still and getting 30 mpg.

it takes discipline to do this but it can be done with the cruise on. remember they have to go around you. stop looking in the mirror. leave a little earlier.

there is no mechanical change that i could recommend. i have changed rear end ratios but that is expensive and i dont really recommend it.

sunday night, cool temp, b2045c in the tank, light traffic blowing by me, passing only once and then being re passed, keeping it between 100k and 65 mph(61 and 105) 60 mile average was 30 mpg. i know 60 miles isn't much of a hwy test but that is the extent of my hwy driving currently.

this involved much rocking and burping of the fuel tank. i really didn't knpow there was so much trapped air to prevent getting a full tank. i managed to fill the tank up to the rim om the lock end of the tank both times.

just bought a fuel heater

Hey hey hey, I just got a Hengst in line fuel heater. I think that will improve the mpgs a few. I just bought a 84 Toyota Camry diesel and it gets, and I siht you not, 50mpg. It is not one half the weight of the mercedes either, so somebody explain to me how 80 percent of the mass get 200% the energy output. Anyhow, I believe there is a way to get 40mpg from the 123 series. Ill let everyone know if I can, the Kid

The Toyota Camry "Turbo-D" is a 2.2L Turbo, right?

I was able to work with two a few months ago and I really loved them. Spunky and yet they sip fuel! How much did you manage to catch it for?

The key to getting best fuel economy is driving like you have an egg under your foot. (Yeah, like I can do that! )

You can try bump drafting like they do in NASCAR....................but I doubt the person being drafted would apreciate your attempts at saving fuel.

Actually simply drafting semi's or Grayhounds works well. When I had a Jeep Wrangler I could definately notice a difference when 12" off the lift gate at 80 mph...

The ploblem with drafting...It upsets the truckers and it's always your fault when you rear end someone. (don't ask me how I know).

big fan of drafting

Ever since I was a bike racer and a VW WEstfalia owner I have been a big fan of drafting, the only problem of course is the view never changes. Its really nice though on the fuel economy. As far as nascar goes, since there are no mercedes entered I do not have much interest, especially since I loath merican cars and those that worship them. Hey Im not an elitist Im just not white trash, I value being intelligent and not being a slave in the merican corporate machine. Guess what, I love the freedoms in this country, I just wish people werent so stupid as to not exercise them. Exhibit A, nascar. Anyhow, when I get the 300td up to 40mpg like it should be Ill let you know. The kid
