Question Did you look

at the s10 ranger dakotah forums.
They do some odd conversions for the fun of it.

I've been researching this concept also. The S-10 was once available from the factory with a 2.2 diesel (Isuzu I believe). Less than 1% of production was such. One owner claimed a MPG range of 33 to 59 with a tendency toward the high end...therefore I estimate that a Benz 240D manual swapped in one of these could potentially get in the 25 to 35 mpg+. That would make a nice little partschaser/work truck. It would sound good and put a star on the nose and it would look "right"

Particularly if your replaced everything you could with fiberglass parts to lighten it up even more......You might end up with something that actually has acceptible performance and good milage.

Problem is in many states that swap wopuld be illegal...what year were the first S-10's produced?

[QUOTE=Problem is in many states that swap would be illegal...[/QUOTE]

BHD makes a good point. Where I'm located it wouldn't be a problem at this time, but in any state with inspections/smog check etc. one would be wise to check with their local Automotive bureaucracy before wasting many hours of work on an "Off road vehicle".

How about a fiberglass bodied model "A" pick-up "streetrod" with a 615-617 in it ? Anyone ever seen a "streetrod" of ANY sort with ANY Benz engine in it ?

Legally you can't put an engine older than the car in the car...or truck, thats federal law....if you have inspections it might fail as it wasn't built as a diesel.....however there are places that you would get away with this...for now anyway.

One of the biggest stumbling blocks is going to be the front oil sump design of the MB diesel. Both the GM and the Dodge are rear sump chassis. I believe the Ford product is front sump still. Trying to fit a front sump engine in a rear sump chassis will require a ton of work to relocate either the sump or the front crossmember that supports the front suspension. This is not a project for the faint of heart. Its a moot point anyway if you can't get it passed the emissions laws. RT
