Hunter, your input to this site is nothing short of amazing and appreciated. Only hope enough people have the common sense to print a lot of your references off and file them. Or perhaps start an electronic file. The other thing is it may stimulate them to get a system up and running by aiding there confidence to tackle it. Hope you are able to keep it up. You will not believe this but two of the three cruise control systems do not work on my mercedes. The hard one looks like a dealer installed aftermarket. When i get to that one will probably just replace it either with an aftermarket or install factory parts off a wreck and then fix that one too.

Hunter,
My '92 500 SL CC has not worked in a year. Sometimes it will work for a few seconds when the car and engine are cold or when it is very damp outside. It sounds to me like a bad GROUND someplace.

No one seems to have tackled this installation. Even GDL has said they do not know much about that system. Is there anyone out there who has info?

Isn't there a thread which shows which components to replace inside the cruise amp, and gives part #'s from Radio Shack or some-such?

I will search again now.

I have deleted several that where nice, after 99% of the data (pictures) became dead links, making them useless.

This is why I spend so much time in the archives re-size, crop, and attaching pictures to technical threads.

:EDIT:
Found this one.

I found one for a Porsche amp...it's a little different, but all the same company.

I have been troubleshooting these for a while now, and am starting to get pretty convinced that it's simply connection and solder issues. Several I have gotten actually had cracked solders. After swapping a few amps out of my car, I am getting a hard time getting any amp (even my good one) to work. That leads me to believe that the connector for the amp is getting worn.

Brake Bulbs ????

In the first article that Hunter posted, thank you large, there is a mention of not using US type 1157 bulbs.
When hitting the brakes, shutting off the CC is the resistance seen by the amplifier? I thought the brake application switch went to ground to close the circiut.

Often you can recover the data from these dead links using the Wayback Machine (http://wayback.archive.org). Almost everything on the internet gets archived. It is a great tool.

The link you found again was again broken, so I traveled back in time & got it:

http://web.archive.org/web/20090925054414/http://www.mindspring.com/~houlihan/merc/cruise.htm

Does this look familiar:

Home Repairs

Cruise Amp Repair

Inoperative or malfunctioning cruise control is often caused by a bad
amplifier. The amp can often be repaired simply by resoldering the
connections on the circuit board. I used this procedure to fix the amp
on my 1980 240D as well as my current 300D.

The amplifier is a small rectangular box measuring roughly 4" x 6" x 1".
It's usually located underneath the driver's side dash.....above your shins.
Remove the long connector attached to one end and then unscrew the
whole box and bring it to your shop. You'll need to remove the aluminum
part of the amp. Simply pry back the metal tabs that hold it on.

Slide the cover off and you'll expose the circuit board. Look carefully at
each component to make sure there aren't any burned parts. If so you'll
have to replace them or the whole amp. You probably won't find anything.

Get a good solder iron and heat it up. Make sure you have good lighting
and a comfortable chair. A magnifying glass will help. Your objective is
to quickly reheat each solder joint. A hot iron is essential. You need to
make sure that you re-melt the whole joint. You may notice a sort of
shockwave ripple across the joint as it melts. This is how I determined
......

I hope that some find this useful.

So what is generally the problem when the cruise stops working on a W124? Or could it be a bunch of stuff?

The general consensus seems to be:
- failing cold solder joints. The joints are crystallizing due to age and perhaps even become intermittent connection points.

- failing capacitors. Lose the ability to hold speed or "remember" speed.
