Good point guys. I did not know about the temperment of cast iron and ways to tend to it properly. I just kind of went for it. So, I guess proceed at your own risk.

Someone mentioned disconnecting the exhaust downpipe and running wide open (no exhaust at all) to see if there would be any magical power gains, or drop in EGT, or anything along those lines... has anyone tried this yet? I'm still itching to hear more about this.

BTW - I don't think I posted this yet, but I started a new thread about installing water injection *instead of* an intercooler, on an OM603. Here's the link:

LOL... maybe a short piece of 3" elbow to direct the flow downward would help.

You want it at lease below the firewall............carbon Monoxide is very unfriendly to the human body.

Thread-jacking in progress

While I agree with your main point (re-directing exhaust out of the engine compartment) I've read in several sources that diesel engines produce very little Carbon Monoxide, and I believe Herr Doktor Booth indicated that it's virtually impossible to kill yourself (aka suicide) with a diesel parked in a closed garage, unlike a comparable petrol car.

Dave, I did say that I was going to disconnect my exhaust and report the results. I have not as of yet. I may get around to doing it this weekend. I will definately report back when I do.

Good luck on your WI install!!

Snow Performance said their small Water/Methanol Injection system WILL work with a 3.0L TD. The only problem, $300. A 50/50% Methanol/Water mix will decrease EGT's approximately 250°+. That should be quite a bit of room to add more fuel.

Bandimere Turck Fest Coupon! Enter 1Z9V for $50 off any Water/Methanol Injection system. The code should be good to 7-31-05.

Videos!

These are some vids I took after I first did the adjustment.
The car (since then) has gotton a bit quicker as I firmed up the shifts and have changed filters/better fuel.

I will take some tomorrow if I have time.

The smoke video is pretty accurate. (was sitting at idle for a bit before I hit it) If I rev it to almost redline, I can get a inky black cloud. With normal driving I get a light tint of diesel soot on the back corner of my car.

The 0-80MPH one is sorta inaccurate as far as timing goes becuase I was starting with a turn out onto another road....mostly its here to show the acceleration and that the max speed has well surpassed 100MPH (note acceleration up to there when I let off the pedal).

Benz Smoke (550K) WMV

Benz Tweaked 1 (715K) WMV

Sorry about the sunshine...and my hair...both rather uncontrolable...

That video of the acceleration is quite amazing. It seems to pull from 60-90 at about the same rate as it pulls from 30-60.

Got some serious improvement there.

Looks like about an 11.5 second 0-60, which is damn fast for a 617.

You watching the egt during this run?

Yeah if I do from a dead stop and without the wheels turned....the time drops down into the mid-low 10's...

I am watching the EGT...at about 80 it is at 1250 or so thus I made a deliberate "let off".

The acceleration is amazing...espially from about 60 up...espically if I use the kickdown. It will pull just like you see on the speedo all the way to 110MPH before I have to really pay attention to the EGT's. The Dyno shop someone told me to go to closed down...the nearest one is in Washington and is EXPENSIVE....

The top end really perked up...I want someone else on the forum to ride in my car and see what they think

So basically it's about equal to a stock 87 300D now, huh? Not bad! The lower gearing (3.07, vs the W124's 2.65) probably helps.
