To protect and to serve??? That's a good one. I think it's been a long time since the police in most cities considered themselves public servants. Now it's "Law Enforcement". I always keep jumper cables in my vehicles. About once every 10 years I need them for myself, the other 10 times a year I pull them out is to help others. Haven't fried any computers yet.... |

I think your jumper cables had more to do with it than the fact that it was a "normal" car. You really have to look carefully at jumper cables to avoid buying junk. I've seen many that look real fat, but its all insulation with only a thin conductor, and that is poorly connected to the clamp. Buy good cables. |

Not to get into a good cop/bad cop discussion but I must recount a couple of experiences with State cops. One Statey was giving me a speeding ticket for going 68 in a 55 zone. While giving me the ticket he went on to explain the ways that I could get out of paying the ticket. In my state if you haven't had a ticket in the last 3 years the present ticket is cancelled. Pretty cool of him to do that. Another Statey drove me 8 miles to a repair shop when my old pickup broke down on a bridge. On the other hand my local cops wouldn't give me the time of day if I was running down the street on fire.

A long time ago when I was having alternator issues on the 240D and every so often I needed a jump. No 4 banger honda or toyota could ever get it to start. Usually a truck or another diesel would come in to save the day. One night in the middle of baltimore I had to leave the car in a parking garage in a not so nice part of town. Sucker was deader than roadkill when I came back out at 2am. So I needed a jump (an experience in itself trying to find someone that wouldn't mug me), finally I came across someone with jumper cables...a baltimore city cop. He gave me a jump no problem. Drove the 30 miles or so back home in the middle of the night with almost no headlight visiblity (they were VERY dim) and no streetlamps to light the interstate. Good thing diesels dont need the battery to keep running

ok, so im sorry i expected a police officer to help a citizen in need.
I'm sorry I had a cigarette. I'm sorry i dont kiss police officers asses; the only thing theyve ever done for me is give me speeding tickets. they laugh when your car is stolen; they dont show up when theres an emergency. they wouldnt make a single phone call to find out whoever hit me on purpose. forgive me if i dont bend over backward to give them kudos. noone made them be police. maybe my distaste for them stems from being a decent person, i wouldnt hurt anyone intentionally and i suppose i expect others feel/think the same. ive jumped the 240 with a neon, intrepid and taurus. i dont believe any of these cars use an especially large battery or alternator. so it really is asking too much for a policeman to jump start a car? i was not alive when times were simpler, but didnt the police open cars and jump batteries then? have our crime rates taken that steep a climb? i guess i should not think of police as people who help people unless there is bloodshed?

In Palm Beach County , Florida the police department gets more funding based on the amount of arrests they make. So the F'in PD is on commission from the state. THAT'S what they care about . It's their F'in job. If that's not corrupt waht is...(Clarify; There are plenty of honest cops doin their job; makin a living; but it's the system they're in that is corrupt...)
As far as needing a jump from a PO; years ago they would do that... As far as being in a McD's watch the documentary, by that guy who does 30 Days...

Always carry cables I do, every vehicle has a set. I get them at boneyards for $2 at times too. I've jumped vehicles of all sorts and have yet to mess one up.
Police or not, they have certain duties to do. A stolen vehicle is a low priority call as is a home break in that's already happened. This is stuff you need to know, unless it's a life threatening emergency response time is slow. Many departments hire anyone, others do not. The city Arlington I'm in has all college grads in their department, which VERY few others do! Treat them with respect when stuff happens, they treat you the same way. Pretty simple. I've been out on a few rideouts they offer to the public, let me say... it's quite an adventure to experience first hand. I'd advise seeing what your department offers to the public so you can get to know how it works, what they offer, and so you can relate to the officers point of view. You may even pick up a few things, here you get stopped for going 20% over the speed limit + 1mph...

My brother left the headlights of his 240D on at a friends house. He called my father and I to give him a jump. We used some old, not-so-heavy duty, jumper cables on the first try. The point where the cable connects with the clamp was very worn. To diesel didn't start.
So we went and got my jumper cables (which I carry with me in my trunk), and the car started right up. My cables are pretty heavy. Diesels require alot of amps to start, so it looks like you need thick cables to carry the current. I carry these cables with me in my little vintage bimmer, so I can start the 240, or any other beast of a car, if need be. The car used was my fathers Toyota Tacoma , with its 2.7 4 cylinder. I wouldn't say it has a powerful electrical system, so heavy cables must have been the reason the benz started. |

The trick is to connect the cables, rev the donor engine for a short while and then start the dead car. Of course, always keep track of your battery life, about 5 yrs. max, and check the electrolyte level too. You don't want the plates to get uncovered. If it's sealed, check the indicator on top.
Late one afternoon, about 5 pm on a Sunday, the wife called saying the car won't start. She tried starting it, with me on the phone listening, it went rat-tat-tat.... Hmmm, dead battery late on a Sunday. I drove over and picked her up, drove to Wal-Mart, sorry, the only place open late Sunday. New battery, car started fine. I'm thinking about an Optima battery next.

I've never worried about it. I know the difference between pos. and neg. and hook the cables up accordingly.
Lets see now, red is positive/+ and black is negative/-. Look at the battery, locate positive post with large '+' sign and usually red wire, on Volvos it's blue, and connect the negative clamp to the chassis or engine. Why is this so hard?
