Forget the jumper cables and just park at the top of a hill (after you install a manual transmission).

MB Automatic transmission can be pushed start if placed in L gear down a long hill.

Which I find cool...

But you are gonna need a long hill with weak glowplugs and a slow turning engine...

educate me on this procedure and its pro/con situation.

i almost find push starting an automatic transmission vehicle(let alone a 26 year old one with 140k on it) troublesome to think about.

what are the mechanicals doing? i know ive push started a vw(as did my friends in high school...) beetle, but thats a very different beastie!

they also like to chew up battery cable thingees.
So you have these 30' long mammoth cables with industrial strength clamps that would "chew up battery cable thingees" of the unsuspecting good samaratan who gave you a boost and you are crying. So how much does 60' of one inch cable weigh anyway?

ok, i get the point.

i shall never expect anyone to pretend to be decent again. hey-- i can play dramatic too. the cables dont eat the battery connections; but yes, after 7 years in my neon giving jumps, the connections have become mottled. my father made them way back then.

he made the cables at his work(a steel mill) i dont know how much 50-60 feet of it costs, im going to field a guess that it didnt cost much.

oh yeah-- noone gave me a jump, thats the complaint that made me start this thread. mercedes had to come out from hoover and hook up the jump box thing that the guy in the m-class said was not charged by the daytime crew...

it all added up to a big ball of frustration. lots of people staring at the guy sweating in his mercedes with the hood halfway open, the cop that refused to help, the telephone operators that acted like mercedes did not have a roadside assistance number, the guy in the m class that came to rescue me but couldnt because of someones neglect to charge the battery box thing. my father does not use a telephone, my mother and sister were out of town, none of my friends could come out to help...

the situation wasnt luxuriant and i refuse to pretend its ok for people to not care. it troubles me that society is that far gone. it is none of youalls fault and i dont think i pinned blame on any of you. i just thought i could come here and get some kind of support from people that have the same car and might have had had the same issue. it was apparently a bad assumption. the general concesnus is that i expected too much to ask someone to open their hood and wait 5 minutes.

Well, here is the best way to do it.
First, stop in at your favorite MacDonalds. Somewhere, I read that lot's of fat police officers and other "bubbas" hang out there. Promise to buy them an ice cream sundae if they will help you push-start your car. (You will want to wear a Nascar hat so you can establish a little rapport with the bubbas.) Before you know it, you will have a enough good ol' boys lined up behind your Mercedes to get it started going up hill!!!
So you start off with the transmission in neutral (put the shifter thang next to the N). And turn the key on. When the speed gets up to around 15mph, yell "Git 'er Done!!!" real loud, then pull the shifter thang all the way back. She will start right up and you can just keep on goin'. Don't worry about buying no ice cream for them cops and bubbas. I mean, just the satisfaction that they will feel from helping you should be reward enough.

Now I could go on about technicalities and mechanicals, but I do understand that might be troublesome for you. I mean, like do you really want to know about how the torque converter connects the engine to the transmission and how them diode thangs only let current go one way in the alternator? And how E=IR. But just remember that the alternator won't work if your battery is completely dead. You do know about the field circuit, right? Personally, I think we were better off back when cars had generators.

Anyway, just remenber that you can always get further with a sundae and a gun than you can with just a gun. And watch out for stupid people. They're everywhere.

Rear pump in the transmission serves the same purpose as a pump up front too...
Most automatics do not have this...

I agree with those who suggest that this thread would fit much, much better in the Open Discussion.

If you were to ask politely, a moderator might be willing to move it for you.

iNeon,
Save your money and time pulling the Alt.
do a search here for voltage and alternator and Battery, and you will find many posts explaining the voltages to be measured on a battery when you start and run a motor vehicle. The alternator voltages are not fuel related so you could search on any motoring forum for these voltages.
In case you can't be bothered,
12.0 - 12.6v Engine off, no loads on.
12.6 - 13.8v engine running
13.8 - 15.0v engine running at medium - high RPM (when 15 is reached, voltage should drop back to 13.8

Well i never have had much of a problem with my car not starting and if i see people who need a jump or help etc. i usually help them. But i was curious as to why the cop refused to jump it. I had a neighbor who had a police interceptor and it had a plug just under the front push rail to plug in a 15'-20' jump cable. that was for guess what jumping cars. But yeah being stranded sucks the big one. i have had to jump many, well one freinds car many times. Also to a similar topic one day my SD would not start it cranked a few times then just went kaput, and nothing my frieind tried to jump it with a Cougar XR7 (same engine as a police car) and we tried for about 15 minates to jump her and she wouldn't budge. then when i got home hooked up the trickle charger and charged the batt. and she fired up drove her around then she has been good to go since.
