Update

Well, tomorrow morning I have the car towed back to the house....here's the damage for snapping off a bolt:

3 bolts: $130
2-way towing: $130
aprox. 4-hous of machinist's labor: $300
Total: $550

Would have been a little easier if either of the guys took credit cards.

Anyways, the machinist started running into the same problem I was having with the final bolt until he determined that it was bottoming out. He ended up exchanging the washer that was originally with the bolt for one or two thicker washers, which allowed it to finally torque properly. I wonder why they (the new and the old bolt) were bottoming out? Apparently the broken bolt was jammed in their pretty hard. The guy was going REAL slow so as to not screw it up. I'm wondering now if maybe the torque wrench DID reach torque, but somehow I missed the click, or it didn't click...

Anywyas, all three bolts had to be replaced as they had been stretched previously from over-torqueing.

I get it towed home in the morning.

If all goes well, I really didn't end up dropping a not into the oil return , and the engine won't sieze on me.

I'll let you all know how it goes once I put everything back together (hopefully before the weekend).

Pete.

cool....this is one of those times it likely would have ended up at the machinist anyway.....

When I RR my head on the ole 250 I read somewhere that I should use a non flanged reamer to clean the threads all the way down. Otherwise I imagine a bunch of crud could get compacted down to the bottom. I also used all new bolts. However elsewhere I did break off some bolts and it's a total pain to deal with.

They used new bolts and completely cleaned out the threads all the way down. For some reason, that last one was bottoming out...

could be the hole

wasnt tapped deep enough at the factory. but i would rather think there is something in it at the bottom that has escaped detection.

glad you sorted it out without removing the head.

Update...she didn't explode 1982 300D

Okay, I finally was able to put everything back together...., I turned the key....pumped it a bit to get the air out of the lines....she purs...

I drove it around the block and up to the store, and the engined didn't sieze up and die, so I'm going with "the nut fell outside the engine" and wasn't in there the first place...I'm not going to entertain otherwise, or my sanity will be lost.

Now that I've got the 3-week, should have been 2-day, "God please tell me I didn't ruin my engine" job out of the way, I have these things left to do:

--Replace the ignition (I nearly threw a super fit when I initially couldn't turn the key after putting it all back together!). It's geting harder and harder to turn.
--Replace the fuel tank strainer (and possibly the fuel sender).
--Replace the drain plugs in the trunk
--Get rid of the surface rust underneath that resulted from not using wood block on the jack stands
--Fix the antenna (motor working, mast not)
--Replace the glowplugs
--Finish fixing the vacuum leak coming out of the 3/2 valves on top of the valve cover (yes, I know you all don't understand why I insist on having a functioning EGR valve, but I do).
--Finish tiding up the 3-way valves that switch between diesel and VO and bracketing them down in the engine compartment.
--Wax the poor girl.

I want to thank all of you guys, very much, for helping me through all of this and making sure that I went to a machinist when that bolt snapped. Very much appreciated, and if you all were close enough to enjoy a round of drinks, they'd be on me.

Thanks, again,

Pete.

P.S. Other than changing the foel tank strainer next Friday, I believe I'm going to put the MB aside for a little while, and get caught up with life.

Being newer on here, old threads always amuse me. Its like time traveling!

This one got me to thinking, more automotive problems have been caused over the years by improper torque on fasteners than probably anything else.

Exactly....any idiot with money can buy the best or cheapest tools made. But there is a lot more to knowing HOW to use them correctly than neophytes are aware of. And it goes far beyond common sense...which I am increasingly aware of the older I get is not being as common as we might think.

A good torque wrench.....and a list of proper torque settings are among the first things you should get, and something everyone should have before they remove the first bolt or nut.

As well as knowing HOW to property torque a bolt. It goes beyond simply what the wrench reads. Oil on the threads can give a false reading.
