Questions after changing air cleaner bracket.
Two things came up while I had the air cleaner off to change the broken air cleaner braket today.
1. The line in the two photos below very easly wiggles back and fourth quite and bit. The photos show how much it moves. The lines connects to a nipple on the bottom of the air cleaner housing, and the line appears to go down to the oil pan. Is is supposed to move like that? And, what is this line? 2. I had to loosen the hard line that goes into the turbo to get the old braket out and the new bracket in. Does breaking the seal on this line cause any probems? Hopefullly not. The line is the one dead center in the photo below. Cheers, Andrew

Pipe in top photo is return to oil pan from air filter oil seperator.
Yes it is loose'ish but be sure you locate it into the air filter housing when refitting air filter.....there's a check valve at the pan to stop oil being pumped up to the air filter. Second...that hard line is the oil supply line to the turbo....you can check for leaks with engine running...usually reseals okay without a new gasket.....well, mine always has. P.S...Your hands are too clean ! .

Thanks,
The clean hands--Thats after I took the air cleaner off the first time, figured out the bracket was broken, but it all back together, cleaned my black greasy hands and went to the parts store. I used robber gloves the second time, much cleaner hands.

That wiggly line can be problematic. I recently found tons of oil around the bottom of my engine. I was freaked out that I had blown a turbo line or something, but turns out, that drain tube had just come loose from the bottom, and was wiggling freely, allowing oil to jump out of the pan.
If you follow the line up from the bottom, you'll see that it has a bracket welded to it, which bolts to the bottom of the turbo manifold area. In my case, the bracket was still attached to the engine, but the weld on the tube had broken! I reseated the tube at the oil pan, and at the air cleaner, and then used a big hose clamp to clamp the tube to the bracket again. No more leak! peace, sam

BTW, you don't appear to have heat shields installed below your rubber air cleaner mounts. There are little steel "cups" that fit under the mounts and protect them from the heat.

that line is th edrain from the oil seperator...it should not flop around freely.
there is or should be a clamp to the bracket between the exhaust manifold and the block.....it has likely been left off in the past becasue its a real PITA to put on and tighten.

If the oil return line wiggles, then the spot welded bracket that it has is broken. It should not wiggle.

My car doesn't have that drain tube....is that a bad thing? My oil collector....drools down somewhere and returns to nature.....I presume the tube was removed at some point in the past. I don't know why. Our 83 has it....

Just make sure the part of the tube that goes into the oil pan is seated properly. I made the mistake of tying the top part of the tube down in such a manner that it wouldn't move about so much up top. However, it wasn't seated properly on the bottom. The result was un explained oil loss....at least until I noticed that in the places where I would make a left turn on a regular basis, there would be these dark arched streaks of black stuff on the ground. Everytime I made a left turn, the oil would slosh to the right side (where the pipe is) and it would dribble out. (ooops!).

air cleaner mount heat shields

Question: Do you install them cup up or cup down? One way would tend to trap more heat and the other way more oil. Is it even an issue? This is for my signature car - 1983 300D-T
