I'll have to see what fuel does this summer, because if it stays over $3 a gallon that will affect my buying decision this fall when I get another car.

I'm cheap so I don't like to spend money on fuel. So if its below $3 a gallon, I can look at E55's , above then its E320/300D shopping.

Long as a car gets over 20mpg I'm happy, I don't want to drive a cheap tin can even if it gets 40mpg.
The E55's seem quite reasonable these days. But then again, you can buy yourself an E420/E430 for much less and still have a car that has a great deal of power, and returns mid 20's in everyday driving conditions.

Best compromise, IMHO for a 210. V8 power, near six cylinder economy, and cheap as a six to initially purchase.

Then again, the overdrive gear makes the car roll quite a bit downhills, and the transmission, being electrically controlled, seems to always try to "learn" your driving patterns. It just never "adapts" if your driving patterns are random. It will also take many seconds after hard acceleration to speed to get into top gear (about a 2 second delay between EACH upshift). The torque converter is not as slippery as the ones from the 722.3x. As a result, they tend to fish a bit if you commute through hilly terrain (much more so with the E320). I don't know about others, but I HATE fishing transmissions.

Forget about the E300s. Prices are still ridiculous. If I were the one purchasing a newer diesel, I'd splurge an extra 8 - 10K dollars to get an E320 CDI with similar miles but is 6 - 7 years newer.

BTW,
Diesel shot up 6 cents a gallon today at the Sunoco I bought from. It is now 2.699, and regular is 2.599. So, the same as mid-grade. But gas will be shooting up again to offset the difference. Especially this travel season (let it hit 'em where it hurts, I say). I'm still returning 26 - 28 mpg on average, so I can't complain.

3-5 minutes is longer than my commute

True but you don't get the AMG suspension, wheels, brakes, or interior stuff. I never had a problem with the 722.6, I think its a better box them my old 722.4.

I probably wouldn't buy a diesel W210, a 6 cylinder powered gas one can be had for almost half, and the mileage isn't that much different.

Now that I picked up another 300SD (This one with half a tank of diesel in it too!) And the weather is warming up, time to go WVO/RUG.

I have and I do check regularly. It is somewhat misleading because there aren't any true "retail" stations in CT yet. I have contacted all of the co.'s listed and most of them only currently do bulk deliveries. Greenleaf Biofuels will deliver a 275 gal. tote but I don't have anywhere I could keep it. But I may break down to see if I can come up with some creative solutions. I just don't trust myself enough to homebrew.

We use about 3000 gals. of diesel/yr. in our little fleet of 3 trucks and I'd love to switch that over to bio-d even if it's only B20.

Why complain?

Why do you guys complain about price of petrol in your country?
We pay, Australian dollars converted to US dollars, $4.86 per gallon. Diesel is dearer.

Approx. 4 years ago, we could buy a 5 litre container of 20W50 oil for around $9 AUD ($7.40 US) now we pay $25 AUD ($20.60 US) .

I would dearly love to come over and visit !

Sorry, I just thought I would bring some perspective to your debate.

I don't complain. It's part of the cost of living and there is nothing that can be done about it.

Dare to challenge?

Thats right. I do agree with you. Petrol is a necessity - at least until an alternative is offered.

Anyhow, who dares challenge the pricing structure of petrol as determined by our friendly oil companies.

I say no more on this matter.

As far as my household expenses go, fuel cost is at the bottom of my list. Sure prices suck but they're just a fraction overall.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I know Europe's higher prices are because of heavy taxes. How much of your fuel cost is tax related? Ours has much less tax, then the average European gallon.

Australia is a big country, and the driving probably compares very well to the driving in this country. Thats why cars like the GTO that you guys sent to us, are so great on the highway.

Our most revered government graciously taxes our petrol - twice. Firstly by imposing a broadbased excise (wholesale tax) of around 40%, then slugs every consumer with GST (aka VAT) of 10% at the bowser.
Australians were told by the govt the GST would be the only tax. That it would eliminate all unfair wholesale taxes. Result ? My trust in politicians is upheld!
Anyhow mates, I reckon we both live in a lucky country.

When they start charging for it? When I started getting WVO, my supplier was paying to have it hauled away, and alot too, so it was a bargain for him to give it to me for free, now these big "green" corporate jackasses are offering them money for it. It is always us little guys that get hosed in everything.

Dead marine industry.
$1k heating bills in the winter.
Every good is shipped via truck so expect prices to shoot up on everything.
Economy not so hot.
Oil based goods such as paint will go up accordingly as well.

You WVO people enjoy cheap diesel while it lasts, do you think people will just keep giving their old oil away when all of a sudden everyone wants it? Maybe we should start taking bets on when they start charging you for it.

Oh yeah it will be great.

Well at least diesel isn't any more then premium anymore, I am happy about that.
