replacing manual sunroof handle. any tips?

This kinda looks tricky. I 'm hopeing it wont be a bear. my sunroof is halfway through the locking position. It broke when i was trying to close it. I just twisted too hard. Oops! Well I havn't found any threads on this so I will take photos as i go. I will post the results. I am going to start this asap as my car leaks now.

On the electric roof you just have to pop out 5 or 6 clips in the front using a table knife and slide the cover out the front (sunroof should be mostly open for this procedure). I think the manual roof is similar but you have to remove the handle first. I'm not positive though, I have not taken apart my manual roof yet.

I'm quoting from service manual: 1. Unlock sun roof lid and take end lever out of recess. 2. After opening sun roof lid 3/4 of the way, unclip sun roof headliner at front and pull it out upward. 3. Open sun roof lid all the way and remove left and right sliding rails. 4. Lift off sun roof lid. Installation: 5. Lube with Anticorit PRC II using a piece of felt or brush attached to an extension. 6. Guide in sun roof lid from above and install sliding rails. 7. Continue installation in reverse sequence of removal. Doesn't mention anything about a broken handle. Photos indicate the handle comes out via a pin of some sort, that attaches to lever. CHECK THIS FIRST. It does go on about adjustments. stcbenz, PM me as this is involved.

sunroof lid has to come out

It appears that the handle is not going to come out without removing the sunroof lid. The handle has to slip around the turning mechanism which is attached from an unaccessable place. Off it comes.

Please please please take pictures of this as you go. I have an iffy handle on my 240, and would love to see some pics before the day I try to change it.

Done this and it's no big deal........

First finish the closing and locking operation. The round ring operating attachment is intact, correct? Screwdriver the right size or vice-grips, used gently will work. Another idea would be bending a nail to fit and then using vice-grips on the nail.

The handle is drilled out for rivet, but a regular hardware store screw the right size will work just as well. I got lucky and found a replacement handle on ebay for $8. And just lined up the handle and slid a regular threaded small screw through it. No bolt is needed, the screw will stay in place.

Am guessing that just the handle is broken on your car and the operating mechanism is intact.

(edit: Also a good reason to keep the manual sunroof tracks oiled and greased so you dont have to force it. My opinion, it's one of the best designed features on the car. Marked "webasto" on the sill strip too, same company that made em for the round body bathtub Benz of 1950's. Mine slides like butter and if left open unlocked will slide shut when hitting the brakes.

MercedesShop forum comes through again.

Thank you for the help. I dont think I would still own my M.B's if it wasnt for this forum.
The sunroof handle was a easy job once I knew the procedure. I took some pics. but I dont believe they are neeeded in this situation. Next parts order will be from fastlane. I want to support this forum as much as possible as it is a valueable rescource. I can count the thousands I have saved by working on my car myself with the help of this forum. Thanks again to all of the helpful mechanics on this board. It is great. Most repair shops wont help you fix your own car because they think it is better to keep secrets so they can charge you $$$. Well I dont take my car to that type of mechanic.
Here you get Honest information from people who aren't trying to make a buck off of you.

When you said you were having difficulties, I should have paid more attention. The handle took me like 2 minutes to take off. I'm sure yours did too, once you saw how it was on there. Great job!!
