I had an Opel Astra diesel in the driveway last weekend. The economy meter changed from mpg to gal/hr at idle. It was pretty cool. I believe its a 1.9 turbo.

Also had a 07 BMW 320d with the 2.0L twin turbo diesel / 6-speed stick. That was unbelievably quick and fun to drive. Didn't get any pictures of it.

I was at a fuel station that has only one Diesel pump. I just finished paying, was walking back out to my 300SD when I noticed a Dodge in line behind me.
This lady gets out of her truck and sarcastically says "I hate it when someone pulls up and blocks the only diesel pump to fill up with gas". I smiled and said "Me too it really gets on my nerves", as I started up the diesel with that familiar smell.

I waved to her as I drove away. (All fingers were extended, in case you were wondering).

My parents had an old chocolate brown 123 I grew up in, it was a gasser. Pulled into an attendant station and he went for the diesel...

How's that for a reversal?

In more recent time I was pouring in my two gallons of filtered veggie oil and other "stuff" prior to filling the tank with diesel and someone asked me what it was.

I replied "Rocket fuel", which technically the second gallon was as it was old (but still clean) kero.

Anyone else out there putting about 5% veggie oil in and notice an improvement?

I'm putting 10% gasoline in my veggie oil and getting a big improvement in my finances vs. #2 diesel !! Steve

I had someone yell at me for smoking a cigarette within maybe 20' of a Shell pump. I was tempted to reply with !@#!@#!@ but I was thinking about the packing heat part, even prior to this thread.
Plus it was in a township where I wouldn't want to tick off the local cops...

Also I got into a conversation a while ago at our local Sheetz ... ok at the entrance to the store, not at the pump .... with a college kid who was gassing up his Jetta.
I was telling him about a recent downhill run where my R320 CDI averaged over 29 mpg over 35+ miles or so, and he said that's about what the best that he got with his gas auto trans Jetta.
Funny (?) thing was, after a leisurely stop and a car wash at said Sheetz, a two door coupe ran the red light (going 40-45 mph at least) at the intersection where I had *just* begun to enter the intersection, and I was able to panic stop to avoid getting t-boned by this maniac. I was thanking BAS and ABS because I felt both kick in that evening... scary stuff....

I had my most expensive fill ever today - I usually pump my own at a local commercial cardlock but was in a rush and got 5 gallons at the corner station, where in Oregon you don't pump your own. 2 miles later things started to go downhill and after stopping I could not restart. Turns out the punk kid station attendant gave me 5 gallons of premium unleaded. He was on his cell phone the entire transaction so I shouldn't be too surprised. A tow and two hours of shop time later I was back on the road. $159 at the local indy, don't know yet what the tow will be, and $17 and change for the gasoline.

By the way, I called MBUSA and they were no help at all. Called the filling station and they were very sorry but they couldn't help me. The kid said, "You asked for 92" "Why would I ask for 92? I drive a diesel!" "I don't know, but I gave you what you asked for. Good luck."

I was lucky though to break down half a mile from a well-known Portland indy. I called them, they set me up with a tow, and on a Friday afternoon they fit me in and got it resolved. I am not even a customer of theirs. Three cheers for MBI.

Robert how you liking the R320CDI? I was thinking that is what we will replace the wife's 91 with in the year or two. I talked to one guy in southern IL that told me he was averaging about 30/32 mpg depending on speed on the interstate (IL has 65 mph limit) and about 25 mpg in town, this was back last summer. He had an '07 with quite a few miles on the thing, IIRC it had about 30k miles on the clock. The guy said he had not had any trouble with the rig and love it for traveling, which I gathered he did a lot of for those miles.

I average about 32/33 because I burn the highway up, but in town when I checked my over all this tank I am averaging a shade over 27 mpg which I am happy with considering the size and power of the car. Sure I would like the city/hwy mpg of our VW TDI's we used to have, just didn't like the shoe box fit for my 6'5" body and wife didn't like her butt dragging the ground as she use to say. When I ran across the 91 and bought it for her she fell in love with it and it has been the only car in 33 years we been married that she hasn't started complaining about month after buying.

Now for a fuel pump story. This last fill up it was me blocking the pumps for a change.

Seems all three pumps are close to gather and no one was at pump so I pull in with filler close to the diesel pump for a change blocking the others and just getting ready to stick the hose in when two gassers roll up to get gas. Should have seen the nasty looks with me in "backwards" pumping diesel into my big white MB sedan. The one guy was laughing and I'm sure telling his wife I had the wrong pump, but little did he know I have 50% better fuel fuel range with only a 2 gallon bigger tank.

We don't pump our own here in my state. In fact it's illegal to pump your own in New Jersey. That's why we don't have any self serve gas stations. Some people want to change this, but I like it just the way it is.

On the few times I've been in NJ, I've noticed that the attendants don't object if you just grab the pump and do it yourself. That probably violates some silly law, but who cares?

My father works for GM power-train competitive intelligence. Both vehicles were from their test fleet. We had the GL320 CDI in October for a few weeks. We made it from Detroit to Chicago and back with 1/4 to spare.

Tells me nothing, there is no miles given to number of gallons used. Heck, I have no idea how far Detroit is from Chicago, or what size the fuel tank is for that matter.

Believe it or not, diesel is not covered. I actually had it out with a Hess attendant, who showed me the code covering diesel. They claimed I HAD to pump it myself as well as pay inside. I've gotten the pump-it-myself at other Hess stations but never the pay inside bull.
