Truckers are allowed to use the dyed, untaxed fuel to supply the refrigerator engines in their reefers.

Allowing farmers, or contractors either, to use untaxed fuel off road, is not a subsidy. Its just letting off road use not haveing to pay the road tax and that sounds fair to me. There should be no road tax on lawn mower, chain saw, ETC gasoline use but its such a small amount, its hard to keep track of.

I'm wondering who is going to pay road tax on Hydrogen or electric vehicles?

I'm as anti-farm welfare as anyone, but I agree that off-road vehicles/equipment should not pay road taxes.

I think the H2 and electrical vehicle question is interesting, I predict a flat fee when these are registered.

That's up to the state.

There is a federal "renewable energy" tax incentive that started 2005 and begins to phase out 1 Jan. 2009 and is out completely one year from that. States were encouraged to NOT tax alcohol type fuels; EtOH , MeOH and biodiesel (as was written "trans esters of plant or animal origin") The states that went along got additional federal highway funding. The catch is in order to get the money you have to make 100,000 gallons per year and have a "Fuel blender's and distributor's" license. Not all states went along with it but where I am in NC the home brewer is not a distributor provided he or she is the sole end user.

The fine on off road diesel is around $2500 in TN I think but the chances of getting caught is slim to none in a car. I would just keep some trans fluid in the trunk and claim thats the red color I think it is the same dye. But you will have to get the fuel in a can and take it home to put it in the car they wont let you pump it in so its a lot of trouble.

question for all

I'm looking to run a skid loader for a while on my property and I'm needing a location to fill up on off road diesel for it but the people that i know don't know where to buy it. Strictly legit just want to buy cheaper diesel for the loader, i have been buying reg diesel for a while and would like a change. I'm near Houston TX 77095

bears,

Check your local truck stops. Some of them have off-road Diesel for Reefers. It would be better if U didn't use a Diesel vehicle to get the off-road fuel.

Many stations in commercial/industrial areas will have a red Diesel pump. It should be obvious as it will be well labeled for off-road/nontaxable use only.

Off road diesel isn't just for farmers, its used in construction equipment and in boats. Why should you pay road taxes when you are not using them?

If you own a gas boat and use a lot of fuel you can get your road taxes refunded to you as well. Back when my grandfather had his boat, he would burn 2k-3k gallons over a season, whats the tax on a gallon of gas $.50? You do the math.

Lawn care, power washer heaters, generators, stationary pumps, etc. too.

I'm not sure if auxiliary power units (APU) mounted to trucks or reefer trailers can use red diesel or not.

Forced,

Any Diesel engine mounted on the truck that does not supply energy to drive the truck wheels is allowed to use off-road Diesel fuel. Most of the dyed Diesel fuel sold at truck stops is for reefers.

What if it is a fuel additive?, so what if I have 5,10,20 times additive to the small percentage of road taxed diesel that is in the tank also.

So use 1 gal diesel to 20 gal wvo/svo/home brew bio, no road tax on any percent of additives that I can find.

And again, no evidence of anyone ever being dipped in a car.

I rarely see those pumps, and they are usually slimy and nasty when I do....I don't want that in my car.

That would likely be considered fraud.
