I feel like placing a recent posting to an epic thread is doing a disservice ... but I had a quick question. APT is out of stock for the actuator and I only saw briefly a mention on page 21ish of an eBay actuator. I didn't quite see how that testing went. Were there any other sources for 433489-12 than APT? I'm starting the google finder of all things for that part number now.

I've bought a barely running 92 300D 2.5 and while going though the repair list, and having the intake/ect apart for cleaning, I might as well do the EGR delete.

So, I'm very sad if I can't get the actuator.

Thank you for contacting us. Currently Garrett part #433489-12 is out of stock. We are trying to order additional units.

ATP-FTG-040 is in stock. Feel free to order online at ATP TURBO - The Premiere Provider of Turbocharging Components

I've been running that eBay actuator since I installed it. Coupled with a cheap manual boost controller it has been working perfectly fine. No issues that I am aware of.

When I was looking for mine, ATP was the only source I could find. At that time as well they were out of stock....but not for long. So you might not have to wait too long.

I have a 91 without and 92 with the actuator mod... if the factory setup is working I would not hesitate to stay with it until it doesnt... the reason I say this is that the factory setup keeps the wastegate open for more of the running time then the manual actuator that is part of the mod... resulting in cooler average manifold temps and less spool up time on the turbo... that said I have not put a pyrometer on eather but I just put the head etc back on the 92 after major overheat of the engine and I was tweaking the full shut position on the mod actuator and was giving some serious thought to the reality of having the wastegate spring loaded shut at all times excepting those briefe periods when due to acceleration the manifold exceeds 14 psi...that said there is nothing inherently wrong with setting up the mod many big diesels are set up this way but the practical difference is that with the 602 engine we are dealing with aluminum heads that tend to be the weak link in the engine... hope this is some help ... just my experience and observation... best

by the by... as far as I know you can do the egr delete ... just blank off the port but leave the flapper and all vacuum lines connected and as far as I know the factory setup will work as the system does a brief close on the flapper after starting creating a artificial manifold vacuum condition ( which never exists in a diesel ) and as long as the computer sees this the wastegate system should function fine.

A footnote to this long and helpful thread. If you do this on a 90 or a 91, and as a result disconnect the vacuum line to the passenger side of the engine compartment, make sure you block off the line on the passenger side that goes to the vacuum reservoir....otherwise you will unintentionally leave a leak in the vacuum system. This issue is moot effective production date 06/91 with MY92, when the vacuum reservoir was eliminated.

shertex thankyou...
when I do the 91...
can I remove the entire line on the passenger side leading from the vaccuum pump to the boost/egr solenoids... what I did on the 92 is I removed that entire line and plugged the T at the vacc. pump I also removed the line that was Teed into the ALDA diaphram that runs over to the computer vac to elect seensor by the battery. If I do this same thing on the 91 am I going to be creating the leak in the reservoir or unintentionaly removing it from the system thereby affecting the vac items such as door locks etc with the engine off ?

thanks and hope my description was understandable.

Yes. Just make sure that the passenger side line that leads to the reservoir is plugged. That's what I neglected to do at first....and just figured out the other day.

Perfect that you didn't have to wait too long shertex.
I've got a long list of repairs to make so I can hold on this one for a bit.

At least worst case I can go with James Dean's setup with the controller.

I think when I did my 91 I just corked that line that went to the passenger side. I should remove the T at the pump to properly fix it.

I also removed the computer lines that ran to the ALDA. I connected the ALDA directly to the manifold.

I dont believe that creates a leak because when looking at mine it seemed to be all pressure based stuff, none of it was vacuum reated.

The relaxed position of the vacuum actuator is wastegate flap wide open. The relaxed position of the pressure actuator is wastegate flap fully closed. Wouldn't you want to adjust the length of the pressure actuator to match the vacuum actuator with full vacuum applied? Did you check that the pressure actuator has as much stroke as the vacuum actuator or at least as much stroke as the swing of the wastegate flap arm?

WRT the video, why did you remove the vacuum reservoir from the BFS circuit? That's not an emissions device and it doesn't hurt performance. On the other hand, I don't know under what conditions there wouldn't be sufficient vacuum for the BFS. It's not like it loses supply vacuum at WOT or full load.

I disconnected it because according to the vacuum diagram when I disconnected everything...the vacuum reservoir led back to the vacuum amp and it was a deadline. I might be wrong and if I am I want to correct it.

Interestingly, if you compare MY 90/91 to MY 92 vacuum diagrams, the elimination of the reservoir was one of the changes MB made...one of the reasons I concluded I could live without it.

True, but if I'm reading page 24 correctly, they removed the BFS as well.

Correct. The 92-93 was BFS-less. Cost reduction effort, IMO. I had a '93 and there was none of the BFS plumbing present. FSM indicated there were valve body changes which eliminated the need for the BFS.

I guess that does raise the question of the precise purpose(s) of the reservoir.
