If memory serves correct 1 Liter = 61.4 cubic inches..

100hp / 61.4 = 1.63 hp per cubic inch, this is an economically obtainable power range... I have a 16 yr old car with a 1.6 liter engine that puts out just over 100hp... Add a turbo or super charger and some modern engine management electronics and that engine will reliably run in the 160hp range...

It can be done, but they have to be small cars. The Smart which meets all current safety specs, weighs 1800 lbs IIRC. The Honda Insight was about the same, but that one's no longer produced.

I don't care about mileage. Why? Because I can earn back the money way easier than I can repair my body. My number is up? No problem. What if I am severely injured or crippled? That I bother about.

Sounds like the ricer argument of HP/cubic inch.

Obviously the person who originally asked that question was talking about a mass shift to lighter vehicles, and not just a few individuals doing it here and there.

This packing on of steel has got to de-escalate one day, just like the nuclear arsenal of US and Russia did.
Ah, but Sir, I'd be safer in a 5000# car when others are driving around in their lunchboxes with an engine.

The person who asked that question was in marketing so he'd say that. I would if I were him but drive my 4000# car.

Sure thing. You go first.

Crash test is but one aspect of the picture. When a 5000# object hits a 1000# object, you might tell me that the both of them don't collapse and kill the passenger. However, which gets shaken around more? Think your brain likes to get "shaken, not stirred."?

The market in Europe will be much better where you can only fuel the 560SEL for 3 years.

Light weight is more expensive to build than heavy. Wanna go light? How light can you afford? Look at a lotus. A benz has a lot of aluminum in it and that drives up cost but reduces weight. Bmw too.

A big bmw bike weighs less than 500#. Nearly half what a Harley or big honda weighs. My old bmw r60/5 weighed only 379#....very light for its class and day.

In dog training terms, we say NILIF. Nothing In Life is Free. Like going fast, going light takes cubic dollars.

Yes I know that, as you can see from one of my posts that you were replying to. I was just saying that with today's technology cars can be made light AND safe (to their own size) at the same time. Hopefully high fuel prices will gradually take the massive gas guzzlers off the roads and make the roads safer for all of us.

yup, I sell and trade in them, amazing systems really, like our MB's quality and single source for hardware... it's when you get "lowest bidders" making parts that machines get screwy

Yes, I know you don't care about mileage since you are made of money and like to argue....

Severely injured or crippled I'll take my chances with I accepted it for years with motorcycles. If it happens the other driver will be living in a cardboard box when the lawyers get done with them. Or quite simply, if I end up in a wheelchair for their stupidity and they weasel out of compensation, my life's work will become taking theirs.
