1982 300CD-T had 120hp @ 4350 rpm and 170 lbs of torque @ 2400 rpm (both SAE net) but seems I read somewhere that later turbo models went up to 124hp.....

I have always assumed that the engine of the CD is same as D model of that respective year.

Do not expect to do a meaningful comparison of diesel engine horsepower with gas engine horsepower. The torque peak is at a lower RPM on a diesel making this an oranges to apples comparison. When the torque peak is at a higher RPM, the velocity in the equation is exponential which increases the horsepower figure dramatically.

Have a great day,

Excellent point Larry. HP being a ‘work over time’ function. Work being the Torque delivered at any given RPM, and RPM being the 'time' function.

There is an old saying that “people *buy* horsepower, but they actually *want* torque”. This is especially true in U.S. driving conditions, where brute force acceleration is more of a selling point versus high velocity Autobahn burning.

As an additional question, does anyone know what was done to the 1985 engines that increased the rated power output? Specifically, were there any mechanical alterations such as valve sizing or cam profile changes? I hypothesize/suspect that perhaps the only difference is that the trap oxidizer allowed the IP to be calibrated a bit richer without producing too much soot from the tailpipe. If anyone has the definite answer, please post!

Thanks

RTH

I have a 1984 brochure that claims 123 hp for the 1984 model year. I don't think MBZ used the trap ox at all in 1984, but began in 1985 in the CA models. Also I believe 1985 turbodiesels had a lower (taller) rear axle ratio.

120 HP @ 4,350 and 250 lb-ft @ 2,400 RPM, not 170.

No, it's definately not 250lb-ft on the old 617 turbo motors. The 603 turbodiesel in my '87 is only rated at 195lb-ft@2400RPM, and it's quite a bit stronger than a 617. Even my newish 606 turbodiesel in my '98 sedan is only rated at 244lb-ft. I recall a figure of about 175lb-ft for the old five-banger turbos.

My info came from old copy of Car and Driver magazine so could be wrong....but that publication is a pretty good one.

Whatever the HP and torque, I like it fine. Not quick but good, steady power. Hills and merge lanes are no problem for my '85 300CD. And I pass pretty much when I want.

I have a '93 chevy pickup with a 6.2 litre v-8 diesel that has 160 HP and plenty of torque, but the mercedes has much more usable power off the line and up hills. Of course it weighs a bit less than the truck.

Hello All, this is my first post! The 1985 300 OM 617.952 motor had 125 hp. The first series of this motor, introduced in the 1978 300SD had 120 hp. Then installed in the 1981 300TDT, it made 123 hp. Finally in 1985, specs were increased to 125 hp.

I believe minor modifications were made to the throttle lickage, valve head, vacume lines/pumps and injection pump. The biggest change in 1985 was the ability for the Transmission to downshift to 1st from 2nd gear while moving. Some other tweaks are possible, but these are basic changes to my knowledge.

Glad to be a new member on the post!

Randall,
Youre right on the $$$$$ with the horsepower figures you posted. My 1983 300D-T produces 123 hp, and the last of the line models (1985) produced 2 more.
Welcome to the club!

Brett
