This thread has the wording for the "filled for life". It's in Gilly's post and it is worth a read if you want to laugh.
1999 S500 with 722.6 Automatic Transmission Filled for life? Some other posts mentioned that the new MB fluid change advice is not in a TSB but a WIS and it may be a general on for all MB transmissions. Some one here probably knows what is means but the "S" is Service I think. If you're only getting 15% from the dealer that did all your service that isn't much of a deal. It can't hurt to ask for more since it failed under their care.

I have called around looking for the Service Info # but each person that I speak with is claiming that they have no idea what I am talking about.
What is the official name of this document (is it a Technical Service Bulletin, a Service Bulletin, a Secret Mercedes Document?!)? Where (what system) can it be found? Do I need to drop some lingo so I sound like I know what I am talking about? Thanks, Christy |

Here a link that has the German version of the bulletin. It is for the 722. and 722.9. It doesn't specify any specific model just not the 4-Matic. Take it to the dealer and tell them to read it! It is from March 24, 2005 and it is WIS-Update 03.05 if that helps.

Somehow I missed your post (post #49) before... I have read Gilly's post. It states "verbatim" but do you or anyone else know where this is from? Does anyone know what WIS stands for? Thanks for the link to the German site - no, I don't read or speak German!! When I get home later I am going to try to use BabbleFish to translate it. I'll post here what I get. Thanks! Christy |

Wis is workshop information system (auf Deutsch). If you're thinking of getting it, you should just get the FSM DVD instead. It is much, much easier to navigate.

I may be too late in avoiding fatal damage at this point, but what the heck...
My 99E300TD has about 115k miles now. Within the last 10k I had noticed the trans had started to occasionally "surge/slip" between the 1-2 shift before 2 would fully engage. Also, within the last month, I've had a couple of occasions merging onto a highway where I was coasting in 2nd or 3rd gear at a low speed, stomped on the gas to merge, the trans jumps to 1st. gear, the engine revs high and the torque converter doesn't seem to be getting any traction-or is slipping badly(not really accelerating). It hangs in first for a while then finally SLAMS violently into second. (I have NOT yet experienced any of the "grinding and metallic sounds as previously posted by someone) I've had this happen a few times now and figure the trans may be terminal. To add to this post, since I bought the car new in '99, I have normally used the "W" setting for the increased fuel mileage. I also have never had the trans serviced as the owner's manual specifically stated that this is unneccessary and is "filled for life". I guess my question is- is it worth taking it in to the dealer and having them do a full "flush and refill" and see if this solves/reduces my problems, (without specifically TELLING them I have been experiencing these problems) -or- is the damage done, and I just wait to be stranded somewhere when it dies completely -or- TELL the dealer of the problems (and watch them wring their greasy, money hungry palms in anticipation) waiting to tell me the trans is toast and needs replacement at the cost of $6k? Any suggestions would be appreciated! J.G. |

I'd have the filter and fluid changed using the newer 722.9 (#3353) fluid. Sooner rather than later IMO.
There are many things that could cause your faulty shifts; it could be as simple as being low on fluid. The dealer can use SDS and review the trans adpatation values providing you additional insight.

Well I read all the way thru this post and I didn"t see where anyone stated that the S/W [as I understand it] is for Summer/Winter. If its icy you put in W so you don't spin the wheels when you take off. I belive it also uses a different gear in reverse so you don't spin the wheels.
On a different note "HUSK" what is a "Argos Bluetooth kit" that you have on car? Thanks in advance for a reply.
