"M" Injection Pump: How to Identify?

I read a thread last week that noted that the "M" injection pump is a little more desirable. I've tried searching for previous threads, but the "M" term seems suppressed by the search engine.

Can someone explain why the pump is more desirable? How it can be identified?

thanks!

Is there some way of identifying it by the serial number on the Bosch tag?

It's more desirable because its more readily modified in Europe by specialty shops to produce greater horsepower.
But unless you're going to modify the engine itself, and spend a couple thousand on rebuilding the pump, it doesn't make much difference.
It can be identified by its looks, there are pics in this thread

Once you've seen an M-pump in the wild, its very easy to spot.

yea, simply bolting on an M-pump will not increase power. There is a whole laundry list of items and work that most be done to the entire engine plus the very steep price tag of getting the pump to Finland to be modified.

if you desire easy, bolt on upgrades for guaranteed success.... look elsewhere or be prepared to spend spend spend.

As far as I'm concerned the M pump can be more of a hassle than its worth, unless your going to spend the big bucks as "UriahT" mentioned. The primer pump is imposable too get to without removing fuel lines and the delivery valve seals sound like a PIA, (haven't done it yet) compared to the US version which is a piece of cake.
I remember a MB shop owner over in Belview mentioned something about the M pump, said he could send it to Finland and for about a grand I could have a faster 240D"

I didn't say I 'hated" it , works fine, just not worth all the fuss unless...you read the post

Sorry, didn't mean to "talk stink" about the holy grail of IPs

Why would anyone want a "M" instead of a "MW" pump?
The "M" is a lighter-duty pump than the "MW".

Oh and I forgot, you have to have the special tool for the splined delivery valves not just a 15mm open end wrench, not a big deal just a little extra hassle.

Read the posts about modifications. It also has a better governor and fuel delivery which results in a better running engine.

Just learnt today that it has a different style VCV valve that is still available new. The MW VCV is NLA.

That one is for the 60X engines, NOT any 61X engine.
